2020 BMW X2 M, Release date, Changes

The first bigger changes on the sub-compact BMW X2 are about to happen. A model for the next year will refresh the lineup, although the small SUV is just two years old. Whatsoever, the competition in the subcompact class is too tough, and the Bavarian company is acting to protect its interests. Its major rival, Mercedes-Benz, announced a big redesign for the new GLA model. The 2020 BMW X2 and the X2M will get on the line and fight back.

2020 BMW X2

The new model could get a hybrid drivetrain. It will join the existing lineup. However, buyers in the US will see only a 2.0-l mill. Also, future subcompact models could benefit from the iNext all-electric concept. Bu, the 2020 BMW X2 is not getting so far. Instead, designers will have more work to refresh the exterior and interior. Well, the small vehicle is not offering too much space, and it could be its major downside. But, the upcoming M package is going to install some high-end features buyers can’t find in some much bigger models.

Pros and Cons

Definitely, the engine range is one of the main advantages of the 2020 BMW X2. If it adds hybrid, that will be another possibility for buyers. Currently, they can enjoy the power coming from a 2.0-l unit. It works smoothly and the cabin is very quiet thanks to the isolation. Drivers are happy with handling and response. Well, this is one of the biggest advantages of the subcompact models, with exceptional fuel economy.

The lack of space is the major lack. But, compared to other similar models in the same class, the 2020 BMW X2 is above standard with passenger and cargo space. Behind the second row, there are 21 cubic feet for your items. Of course, the X2 belongs to the premium segment, so its offer in the cockpit is on the higher level. Again, if we compare it to rivals, we will find that BMW steps up with advanced technology, especially in the safety segment. Well, all this causes the price to go up. It starts just under $38,000. For this amount of money, mid-size seven-seat SUVs are offering a nice amount of equipment.

Under the hood of the US version is a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. It is paired with an xDrive AWD system and the power is distributed through an eight-speed transmission. The gearbox is automatic, but it also offers manual shift mode. All-wheel drive is the only mode, while the crossover returns 21/31 mpg.

Outside the US, you will also find the 2020 BMW X2 with inline-three petrol, and four-cylinder diesel engine. Bath are turbocharged to deliver maximum power. A 1.5-liter displacement is good for 140 hp and 160 lb-ft of torque, that will allow this X2 to sprint to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds. The US version needs 6.2 sec, while the European 2.0 model produces less power and needs 1 second more. A diesel version comes with four different configurations, each developing 115, 150, 190, or 230 hp. The torque level is also ranging from 200-330 lb-ft ( 270-450 Nm).

Top of the range version of the subcompact crossover is coming next year. The 2020 BMW X2M will squeeze more power and twist from an existing 2.0 engine to reach at least 300 hp. In this case, the vehicle will need less than 5 seconds for 0-60 mph acceleration. On the other hand, the fuel economy drops, but not radically. Of course, there are a lot of other upgrades available with M package, including the unique grille, body colors, and wheels. Inside, the X2M is packed with the navigation, premium audio, and sportier seats.

Hybrid

BMW is going to launch more hybrid and all-electric vehicles in the next few years. However, there is not any clue that 2020 BMW X2 hybrid could become part of the lineup. On the other hand, it is the easiest way to enter this segment – through the smallest model. We believe the X2 will go all-electric in the foreseeable future. But, the next year is not bringing such spectacular turns. Its major rivals are still without hybrid models (except Lexus UX), so the Bavarian giant doesn’t have to hurry. At this moment, the focus is on the electrification of the flagship X5 model.

2020 BMW X2 vs Mercedes GLA

There are a lot of similarities between the two big rivals. The smallest class is not too interesting, but we will see the battle there as well. The new 2020 Mercedes GLA is going to introduce a lot of changes, and the German carmaker is still not out with details. The company is also preparing the new GLB model, that is slightly larger than GLA. The starting price of BMW’s and MB’s models are high. But, the situation is becoming more serious when both subcompact vehicles hit $50,000 mark for their high-end M and AMG packages.
