The 2020 Cadillac XT7 is the concept that brings the all-new SUV to the market. General Motors introduced XT6 this year as the three-row mid-size SUV. So, it is unclear where will the XT7 land. There is no way the company is replacing its legendary Escalade. On the other hand, we might see the coupe version of the XT6. Furthermore, we found rumors about another new arrival, Cadillac CT7 sedan. These two could share a lot of things in common.
Experts are sure the coupe-like SUV is the body style of the upcoming 2020 Cadillac XT7. It will still have three rows of seats, but with fewer room passengers at the back. Also, cargo space won’t be so generous. Under the hood, we can expect the same drivetrain. But, the new SUV could also make things interesting with a hybrid system, or even a V8.
Equipment and features are what makes Cadillac stand out from the competition. It is still early to talk about the final product. Whatsoever, the first model will present some of the most advanced accessories in the automotive world. On the other hand, the production version will bring similar equipment like the one we see on Escalade or XT5/XT6.
Where XT7 Fits in the Cadillac SUV Lineup?
The SUV segment is growing. Now we have all types of vehicles, from subcompact to full-size models. We believe there is no room for expansion. Smaller than subcompact, or a heavy-duty SUV will hardly meet efficiency and emissions standards. So, companies are introducing the new sub-classes to offer a combination of advantages from two neighbor tiers.
For example, we expect the 2020 Cadillac XT7 to take a slot between full-size Navigator and the mid-size XT6. The new SUV will be lighter than its larger sibling, it will bring a better fuel economy, and the price would be lower. On the other hand, XT7 is larger than XT6 and it will be capable to take the V8 engine and deliver more power.

But, the company is about to spice the things up by delivering a coupe-like SUV. The 2020 Cadillac XT7 is not the first-ever vehicle in this segment. We can also find BMW X6, Audi Q8, Lamborghini Urus… So, the XT7 would be the first US luxury SUV with such body style.
Coupe design brings the sleeker and more attractive look. On the other hand, the sloping roof will make the interior space suffer. Headroom in the third row takes the most damage, as well as the cargo area.
2020 Cadillac XT7 Specs
While it is certain that XT7 is a new coupe, we still don’t know what kind of a drivetrain it will use. It depends on the size, mostly. The base version will definitely use a 3.6-liter V6, capable to deliver 310 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and the choice between FWD and AWD is what you get with this powertrain.
On the other hand, General Motors have plenty of other engines that can fit a mid- or full-size vehicle. It won’t be strange if the 2020 Cadillac XT7 comes with a 5.3-liter V8. Its larger cousin, Escalade, is using a 6.2-liter displacement only. So, the XT7 would be a lighter version of the full-size model, and stronger edition than the XT6. A 5.7 V8 creates 355 hp and 385 pound-feet of twisting power.
Diesel and Hybrid Engines
The size of the 2020 Cadillac XT7 will allow the SUV to have two other options. The first one is a new turbodiesel unit. Available for few models already, a 3.0-liter Duramax engine is producing 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Of course, outputs could be tuned to meet the needs of the mid-size or a full-size model. The new ten-speed automatic gearbox is a power router.
On the other hand, it is more likely to see a performance-oriented hybrid version of the existing 3.6-liter V6 engine. Mercedes did it with GLE Class and the Porsche stunned us with their new E-Hybrid system. However, this electric support is not easy to develop, and GM still owes us hybrids in other class. Its rivals are already taking over the market (Ford Explorer PHEV, Lexus RX Hybrid…).
When Will 2020 Cadillac XT7 be Available?
The XT6 SUV is still fresh. The company is launching it as 2020 YM. So, the new debut will have to give it some time. We believe that XT7 is coming next year, but only as the concept vehicle. Well, the company will have to start production as soon as possible, so we could see the coupe-SUV as 2021 YM. Also, GM will have to make some room in its factories, or increase capacities to start building so many new vehicles. If they are also after the new CT7 sedan, then these two vehicles will cause a serious expansion of production capacities and manpower.
