2020 Chevrolet Traverse Release date, Colors, Interior

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse will be a seven-seat, three-row, mid-size SUV. General Motors is using the same platform for a few of its models in the same segment (GMC Acadia, new Cadillac XT6, and Buick Enclave). Traverse is a new model, so for the next season, we won’t see big changes in the existing vehicle. However, the company could add some special version or a limited edition model. Fans hope for the off-road SUV, but it is not likely to happen. Seven seats and all-terrain capabilities are not compatible.

2020-Traverse front view

Two big things happened for the new generation of Traverse. It was introduced last year, and besides the big redesign, the new SUV dropped a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This makes us believe the engineers are working on the replacement. The first thing coming to our mind is hybrid. Well, it is a matter of time when GM is going to electrify its SUVs since the US giant is losing pace with the competition in this segment.

2020 Chevrolet Traverse Specs

The 2.0-liter engine was turbocharged and it was capable to deliver 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Also, this was a fuel-friendlier option than V6. On the other hand, a larger unit can create more power (310 horsepower), but it also consumes more fuel. Front-wheel drive is standard and AWD optional. A nine-speed automatic transmission is one of the smoothest in the industry and one of the major factors why buyers are choosing this SUV. On the other hand, the mid-size vehicle is not so capable to haul. The towing capacity of the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse will be 5,000 pounds. Most of its rivals go over 6,000 lbs.

Hybrid

We are still waiting for the official update. However, engineers are definitely developing hybrid drivetrain. Not only the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse will benefit from it, but also most other vehicles in the same category. The SUV needs to respond to growing challenges since Toyota Highlander is not the only mid-size three-row model anymore. The other companies are also developing their systems that improve power outputs and fuel economy.

The V6 engine could get at least 20 horsepower more to the current output. Also, the fuel economy takes a major boost. If the 2020 Chevy Traverse Hybrid becomes the reality, expect it to return at least 27 mpg combined and up to 30 mpg in the city cruising.

2020 Chevrolet Traverse vs Ford Explorer

Chevy and Ford are fighting for supremacy in each class. So it is in the mid-size three-row segment. The new Explorer is coming with a hybrid drivetrain, so GM needs to respond quickly. Well, Traverse was faster and launched the redesign for 2019 YM. Ford will do it for its mid-size SUV next season. Even after changes, the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse will offer more cargo space (98 vs 87 cubic feet total, 23 vs 18 cubic feet behind the third row). Ford is still offering a four-cylinder engine, while the V6 is turbocharged and creates 365 hp. The result is a better towing capacity, which is now 5,600 pounds. The price will be quite similar.

Other Rivals (Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander)

Explorer is not the only rival in the mid-size segment. Two Japanese vehicles are among the best-selling models. Toyota Highlander was the only hybrid SUV with three-rows in this class. Now, it heads to the new generation, which should arrive in 2020 or 2021. Honda Pilot was redesigned recently and it gained a lot of attention. Sales jumped significantly, so we must consider it as a true competitor in the class. Other possible challengers are Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Forester, or Dodge Durango.

Trim Levels

The versatility of the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse is not in doubt. When the SUV offers eight trim levels, you can be sure there is something for anyone. The base trim level is L. The LS brings more features, while the LT is available in two variants – with a cloth and leather upholstery. Premier version offers some serious features which notably increase the price. Still, High Country is the most expensive model of all standard trims. The new 2020 Chevy Traverse will drop an RS model since the SUV is not going to use a 2.0-l engine anymore. The Redline Edition could come back with unique upgrades and styling. We believe that GM is going to replace the RS model with some high-performance version to compete with Dodge Durango SRT.

Price

The base 2020 Chevrolet Traverse costs $31,000. The most popular one is LT cloth with a price tag of $35,000. If you want to add leather, it will cost you around $7,000. Top of the class model is Premier. Its price exceeds $46,000. Fully-loaded High Country SUV will cost you $55k. Still, for the model of its size and equipment, this is still a competitive price. The hybrid drivetrain will change things up. Also, if Chevy introduces a high-performance version, the cost will just go up.
