2020 Chevy Captiva Review, Specs, Hybrid

Only a year after the official discontinuation, the GM is bringing back the 2020 Chevy Captiva. This is going to be the vehicle for Pacific Asia and it will be built in Thailand. The Captiva is not all-new GM model. Instead, this SUV is the rebadged version of Baojun 530, Chinese model. Unlike the last edition of Captiva, which was a mid-size SUV, the new version is more compact. Still, there will be room for seven seats inside the cabin.

The company is not releasing too many details. The 2020 Chevy Captiva had a premiere in Bangkok and it immediately drew a lot of attention. The first generation of the crossover SUV arrived in 2006 and it made an immediate impact in Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. The Captiva is not coming back to Australia, where it was named Holden Captiva. Holden is an Aussie company that sells Chevrolet’s vehicles. This time, with Captiva being a rebadged version of Baojun 530, there is no way to arrive in Australia.

2020 Chevy Captiva Specs

There are two engines available for the new 2020 Chevy Captiva, or Baojun 530. The smaller displacement is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit. The company didn’t release specs of the new model, but it is definitely a budget-friendlier version.

If you need more power, then you should pick a 2.4-liter mill. Also a four-pot engine, it can deliver 140, 145, or 147 horsepower. Also, engineers are tuning the torque to create between 170 and 180 pound-feet. Standard configuration includes a 6-speed manual transmission as the power router. Front-wheel drive is standard and AWD optional. In some markets, buyers can find the new Captiva with CVT or DCT transmission.

Other Possible Engines

The new 2020 Chevy Captiva can borrow the drivetrain from its Chinese sibling, Baojun 530. This crossover SUV is using a 1.8-liter unit as the only choice. This powertrain can be rarely seen on in usage. It is capable to burst 135 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. Also, a special 5-speed manual gearbox sends power to wheels.

The other one is a 2.0-liter four-banger with 170 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine is going to be available only in India. The previous version was good for 150 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. In both cases, a six-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission.

Hybrid

Besides the petrol drivetrains, the new SUV could also get a diesel unit. For the Chinese market, it is more likely that the 2020 Chevy Captiva is about to present the hybrid engine. This country has big problems with pollution and more and more electrified models are on the streets. Baojun 530, or Chevy Captiva hybrid is not unlikely to happen.

Since this is only a rumor, we still don’t know what kind of engine could enter the hybridization process. The existing 1.5 or 2.4 mills are possible, as well as the other drivetrains we mentioned. On the other hand, new systems are also an option.

2020 Chevy Captiva Redesign

The company decided to discontinue the old Captiva because of many reasons. Slow sales, aging design, poor efficiency. All of these segments needed updates and upgrades. The all-new 2020 Chevy Captiva is based on the Baojun 530. It takes the same styling, most features, some drivetrains to fix all issues the vehicle had in the past.

These changes include a lower position of the SUV. Also, the new Captiva is larger than before. But, it is still the compact crossover, while it was a mid-size model when it appeared in 2006. How? Well, all the classes are growing and the size of each segment changes very frequently. But, let’s get back to our Captiva which is going to be 2 inches longer than before. That is enough to keep a three-row layout and offer more space for all passengers.

The overall length of the new crossover SUV is 183 inches. A five-seat layout comes with enough space for five persons and their cargo. A seven-seater is a bit cramped, but it is a good option for larger families. Outside, we will see new headlights, the same ones Baojun is already using on its model. Daytime running lights are standard.

2020 Chevy Captiva Release Date

The previous version of the Captiva SUV was available only in some markets. Now, with Holden out of the game, since the vehicle is based on the Chinese platform, the region where 2020 Chevy Captiva is going to be sold is limited to Pacifica Asia only. Whatsoever, the US company will definitely look to expand the market for its new SUV, especially if it gets a hybrid drivetrain.

The new 2020 Captiva had a premiere, and it is just a matter of time when it will be available for purchase in India and other Pacific Asian countries. The price will also depend on the market, engine model, and trim levels.
