Equinox was the fourth best-selling compact SUV in 2018 and the No1 among US carmakers. Only Toyota Rav4, Nissan Rogue, and Honda HR-V managed to sell more units than Chevrolet. The third generation of the crossover is doing good so far. It was launched in 2017 and the 2020 Chevy Equinox will bring first visible updates. After fixes of small issues during the first two years, the next edition is coming with some serious cosmetic updates. Probably the most important change is happening under the hood – the 2020 Equinox is getting a hybrid engine.
Chevrolet will use the same trim levels as for its other SUVs and crossovers. The position of the 2020 Chevy Equinox is above subcompact Trax. A larger vehicle is Traverse. The base offer is L package, while the fully-equipped Equinox is coming with Premier suite. For the new edition, General Motor will add more equipment for all trim levels. Existing features will be updated. Also, the new 2020 Equinox continues to use a 1.5-liter engine as the base drivetrain. Larger unit and a diesel powertrain are further options.
2020 Chevy Equinox Pros and Cons
Definitely, the build of the 2020 Chevy Equinox will require some time and it is going to be fun. Although it belongs to the compact segment, the crossover is pretty comfortable. Drivers will appreciate its maneuvering and handling. Equinox is also a fuel-friendly vehicle, especially with a diesel engine under the hood. However, the diesel engine is not so popular among buyers. The new nine-speed transmission is not so smooth as we expected. Base trim levels will offer more features, but again, Equinox has to do more. Extra options are pretty expensive. However, as a whole, the crossover could receive high grades for overall impression.
Spy Photos and Refresh
The new 2020 Chevy Equinox will bring first changes, that is for sure. Spy photos of the vehicle under camouflage confirm these speculations. Well, the overall contours are the same as before, so minor refresh is about to happen. The new model will have the same dimensions as its predecessor. It is 183 inches long (107 in wheelbase), 73 inches wide, and 65 inches high. What we can’t see under the panels are new colors. Well, the company wouldn’t test it on the prototype. However, we are sure the GM will start the refresh from the paint section.
2020 Chevy Equinox Specs
As said, the 2020 Chevy Equinox will continue to use all its existing engines. The base setup comes with a 1.5-liter turbo-four drivetrain. Towing capacity of this 170 hp rated unit is 1,500 pounds. It also adds 200 lb-ft of torque and returns 26/32 mpg for city/highway drive. The standard configuration pairs the powertrain with a six-speed automatic transmission and sends power to front wheels. Optionally, all wheel-drive models consume more fuel. The mileage drops by 2 mpg combined.
The same drive modes and transmission are used for the turbodiesel engine. Again, it is a four-cylinder mill. Diesel unit is more efficient with mileage up to 40 mpg on highways. Combined, the 2020 Chevy Equinox Diesel returns 35 mpg. With AWD on, the mileage is 34 mpg. This engine can produce 140 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque.
The most powerful unit in the lineup is the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. This one is delivering 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Engineers replaced a six-speed gearbox with a nine-pace transmission. Again, all-wheel drive is optional, while the front-wheel drive is standard. Fuel economy difference is only 2 mpg compared to the other petrol engine. But, the power and torque coming out the 2.0-l unit make the 2020 Chevy Equinox more capable for hauling. Towing capacity of this configuration goes up to 3,500 pounds.
For the next season, the 2020 Chevy Equinox could get a hybrid engine. This will be the next hybrid after Chevrolet Bolt. The crossovers and SUVs are in expansion and the company is trying to improve the offer. Besides diesel and petrol engines, trim levels, and optional packages, another choice for next season will be a hybrid engine. It is true that diesel unit beats some hybrid rivals, but electric support makes less CO2 gasses. Chevy is trying to keep up with competition that already entered the greener market of the automotive industry.
2020 Chevy Equinox Prices
The entry-level L model of the 2020 Chevy Equinox will cost $25,000. The base configuration includes a 1.5 engine and front-wheel drive. LS package adds $2,000 and LT $1,500 more. Top trim level is Premier. With the standard drivetrain setup and this suite, Equinox will cost $33,000. Depending on a trim level, diesel engine upgrade will cost $2,000 to $2,5000, while the 2.0 petrol unit is $2,500 higher than the standard 1.5-liter drivetrain. Well, these two engine options are available only on LT and Premier models. If the hybrid appears, its price won’t start under $33,000. It requires special equipment and designers are not going to offer it with the base L or LS trims.
