Subcompact crossovers are not so popular like its bigger siblings. Sales numbers are showing that there are no big sales in this class. Only a few models manage to sell over 100k units in the US. Worldwide, small crossovers are managing to sell more copies. These vehicles are there because of their versatility, budget-friendly nature, and exceptional fuel economy. The 2020 Ford Ecosport is the smallest model in the Blue Oval’s crossover/SUV family. It is ready for the new generation after seven years. A small revisit in 2016 was enough to step into the US ground. Now, the all-new model is ready to fight Jeep Renegade or Honda HR-V for more buyers.

Spy photos of the next-gen 2020 Ford EcoSport appeared for the first time this week. According to announcements, the new crossover will be even lighter. With more aluminum in its body, we can’t imagine fuel economy numbers. That is not all since Ford is considering a hybrid drivetrain for its smallest vehicle in this segment. We will see the output of the new unit since the current engine is underwhelming with only 125 ponies.

Well, the spy shots are confirming something is going on with the 2020 Ford EcoSport. This small crossover will come with the new look to refresh the interest. However, we don’t expect huge things, since this model is not a priority. Bronco is a flagship vehicle for the next season. Whatsoever, it doesn’t mean engineers and designers will stop developing other crossovers and SUVs.

Well, we can’t say too much about the new EcoSport watching at its prototype. Camouflage is hiding the entire body. It is obvious that crossover is using the same platform. Lack of space is going to be the major downside. Well, it is the problem of subcompact crossovers. Dimensions are similar, but even slight growth won’t make EcoSport a comfortable vehicle. The good thing – parking is far easier.

Interior

The test mule is still plain inside. There is a lot of work ahead of designers. Sync3 is getting more options and features. Air conditioning system and a rearview camera are standard. At higher trim levels there are moonroof and parking sensors. Titanium remains top of the line model. Leather seats and larger, unique wheels are available.

Exterior Changes

First of all, the new 2020 Ford EcoSport is getting two or three more paintjobs. The front fascia is coming with bumper and headlights changes. At the back, there are exhaust tips and taillights updates that make the EcoSport more aggressive. A new set of wheels and more ground clearance is making this model more off-road oriented. Well, it is not a Raptor, but 8-inch ground clearance will definitely allow you to go to some adventures in the wilderness.

2020 Ford EcoSport Specs

The 125 horsepower is pretty weak output. However, the subcompact crossover is offering a lot more than that. Its agility and exceptional fuel economy are perfect for a city cruising. Still, we could get even more from the base 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit. It is capable to create 123 lb-ft and return 28 mpg combined. Front-wheel drive is standard. If you want an all-wheel drive, then you will get a larger 2.0-liter inline-four engine. It is capable to produce 165 hp and 150 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds. On the highway, the larger drivetrain consumes the same amount of fuel (29 mpg). Well, in urban areas the fuel economy drops to 23 mpg.

Outside the US, the subcompact 2020 Ford EcoSport is available with three more petrol engines. These are 1.5 and 1.6 displacements. A smaller one is available with three and four cylinders. Of course, the crossover is offering a diesel unit. A 1.5-liter TDCI inline-four can produce 100 hp and 150 lb-ft of twist.

Hybrid

The US company has big plans for the next few years. Ford confirmed they are developing a new range of vehicles with hybrid and all-electric models. The entire lineup will get one of these drivetrains in the next ten years. The Blue Oval company already announced a few crossovers, and we hope to see the 2020 Ford EcoSport Hybrid.

The drivetrain would combine a 2.0-liter unit with an electric motor. Power is not going to gain too much power. But, the gas mileage could reach 35 mpg combined. Still, this is a small crossover, so the changes require some space for new features. The redesign and a new generation are coming at the right time to provide all necessary room for equipment such vehicle could require.

2020 Ford EcoSport Price

With the new generation on the way, the 2020 Ford EcoSport will cost slightly higher than before. As the smallest model, it is also the cheapest in Ford’s crossover/SUV family. With a destination fee, it won’t go over $21,500. Still, you can always raise the bar with high-end equipment. Titanium model could increase the price of the Ford EcoSport to $30k.
