It’s no secret that the company works on the new version of its famous SUV, but latest reports suggest that we will see 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid as well. The new generation is about to come with a lot of changes. We are about to see a bunch of new design solutions that will make the new model better. First of all, there is a new platform to come, borrowed from the new Aviator. Also, you can count on a completely new styling, adapted to the company’s latest design language. Interestingly, the new model will be significantly bigger. A hybrid version is about to come with a completely new powertrain, though more precise details are still unknown. The new generation should come in the summer of next year.

2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid Platform

There is no doubt that the new 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid will feature pretty much the same base characteristics as gasoline models. The company prepares a redesign of the famous model, which will come completely new in the next year. The most important novelty of this redesign will definitely be a new platform, for many reasons. First of all, the new model is about to get bigger. The new generation will borrow the platform from Lincoln Aviator, and even the company has confirmed a much longer wheelbase. Our estimates suggest that the new model will be for about 10 inches longer.

Another important thing about the platform is that the 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid will move closer to its SUV past. It may not get a classic body-on-frame platform, but it will come with an RWD layout, which will definitely provide much better driving dynamics. Finally, the new architecture will bring a lot of weight savings. Unlike Ford’s truck lineup, which utilizes a lot of aluminum, this one will mostly use steel. Even without such intense use of lightweight materials, the new model will be for about 200 pounds lighter, which will definitely bring improvement in terms of fuel economy and overall efficiency.

2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid Exterior and Interior Design

The most notable thing about every redesign is styling. Simply, the exterior look is something that attracts potential buyers. For that cause, the new 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid will come with a significantly improved visual appeal. Despite the crossover nature, this model will continue with its boxy shape, which doesn’t just provide a more muscular stance, but also brings a lot in terms of practicality. We are about to see a very similar shape, just in a bigger package. Of course, expect an implementation of the brand’s newest design language. Most of these new parts will come at the front, but the rest of the crossover should come with a bunch of subtle changes as well.

This is the aspect that will separate the 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid from the rest of the lineup. As you probably know, the company plans to introduce more than 20 hybrid version in the next five years. This will be one of them. At the moment, it is still unclear whether the new model is about to come as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, or we are about to see both versions. Other than the electrified version, this crossover will be relying on EcoBoost units. The old Duratec V6 will finally be retired. Instead of this unit, we will see two more EcoBoost engines, with displacements of 2.7 and 3.0 liter. Another important novelty for the next year will be a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
