2020 Hyundai Kona EV, Colors, Hybrid, SEL

The new 2020 Hyundai Kona is out. The subcompact crossover brings cosmetic changes to refresh the offer. Meanwhile, the Korean carmaker is preparing the all-new model, even smaller than Kona. It is a Hyundai Venue. Well, the subcompact Kona is offering all you can expect from this class – quiet ride, excellent fuel economy numbers, lack of space for larger families. On the other hand, the new model receives maximum grades for safety, which doesn’t happen so often in this segment.

Changes for the new model include a new trim level package. It is the SEL Plus, that borrows a 4.2-inch dashboard display from the Ultimate edition. Upper versions are using some advanced features, such as wireless charging, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and adaptive cruise control. Compared to the 2019 YM, you won’t find Iron Man trim. The new 2020 Hyundai Kona is getting power from a four-cylinder engine and there are two available setups available. The last, but not the least impressive, is Kona Electric, with the range of 279 miles.

2020 Hyundai Kona Price

The 2020 Hyundai Kona is adding one more trim level and buyers now have five variants in the offer. The base crossover is still the SE with the price tag just above $21,000. SEL package adds around $2,000, while the SEL Plus model is closer to the high-end section with the price tag of $25k. Above this one, we have Limited and Ultimate trim levels. The first one costs from $27,000 and the most expensive, fully-loaded crossover reach $30,000. Kona Electric comes with the MSRP between $37,000 and $45,000.

Specifications

A pair of four-cylinder drivetrains are in the offer for the new Kona. The company carries over the engines from the previous edition. The base model is using a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated unit capable to deliver 150 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque. Six-Speed auto transmission is a pair for this drivetrain.

The other solution is a smaller, but turbocharged 1.6-l unit. In this system, the output you get is 175 hp and the torque increase is more significant – 195 lb-ft. the engine also has a new pair – a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Fuel economy is the same as for the non-turbo model. But, max speed and acceleration are getting a boost.

2020 Hyundai Kona EV Range and Specs

Hyundai sets a challenge to its rivals. While most other popular companies are still planning to enter the electric segment, the Korean company delivers the new version of Kona EV. The crossover is available worldwide. A 64 kWh batteries pair an electric motor, for total 200 hp and nearly 300 lb-ft of torque. The battery is huge enough to offer a range of 279 miles. It is a 21-mile upgrade compared to the previous edition.

The 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric needs just more than 7 seconds to accelerate 0-60 mph. Max speed is 100 mph. Front wheels are using the power to move the vehicle. The battery needs 10 hours to recharge on a home outlet. Quick fill will take 45 minutes to recharge the battery for 200-miles range.

2020 Hyundai Kona Leads the Segment in Safety

Large crossovers and SUVs are much safer than their compact siblings. So, the subcompact class is struggling when we talk about this segment. On the other hand, there is the 2020 Hyundai Kona, one of the safest models in its class. Safety agencies are giving top remarks and grades for crossovers systems.

And there are plenty of advanced options available for upper trim levels. The vehicle gets the Top Safety Pick + for the crash tests. The crossover comes with automatic braking in emergency situations, lane-keep assist, and high-beam headlights. Other features are available either at higher trim levels or through optional purchase.

Interior

Besides safety, the new Kona will be recognizable for its interior convenience. The exterior is stylish, and designers managed to bring the appealing look inside as well. Well, do not expect too much room. But, having in mind this is the subcompact model, we can say it offers more space than its rivals.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto services are standard. Comfortable seats and quality upholstery will make a strong impression right from the first ride. Analog gauges control the screen at the center of the dashboard. There are also some buttons on the steering wheel, which is wrapped in leather with contrasting stitches. The standard model is using a 7-inch display, while the larger screen is available for the Ultimate model (8-in). With it, you will also get navigation and premium audio.

Competition

The  2020 Hyundai Kona is the subcompact crossover that stands out with its styling, wide engine offer, and safety. That is enough to make a huge breakthrough in the market among other more popular carmakers. Toyota C-HR, Honda HR-V, and Nissan Kicks are the best-selling vehicles in the class in the USA. Also, there are domestic companies, with Chevy Trax and Jeep Renegade. The Electric model doesn’t have a true competitor yet. Kia Niro EV is a close sibling and two Korean companies are developing systems together.
