Cherokee is one of the most popular crossovers in the United States. It is in the fifth generation, started in 2014 as Cherokee KL. However, the company is not launching the new one yet. Currently, the focus in on the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Besides the name, this SUV has nothing to do with the model we will talk about here. So, the changes on the 2020 Jeep Cherokee will be interesting, since the company announced a mid-cycle refresh. Front fascia remains the same, with a seven-slot grille mask as its highlight.
Changes will encounter the engine room as well. The new 2020 Jeep Cherokee will keep most of the existing drivetrains. But, the company will make some space for further additions. For example, the hybrid is a more likely option, while the diesel is appearing in more and more rumors. Whatsoever, the number of modifications on the 2020 Cherokee redesign will be enough to lure more buyers, especially youngsters.
2020 Jeep Cherokee Engines, Specs
The 2020 Jeep Cherokee will offer both four and six-cylinder engines. We are pretty sure that the base option remains a 2.4-liter four-pot drivetrain. With 185 horsepower, it is not capable to compete with some serious rivals. Still, it offers an efficient and fuel-friendly option to buyers whom gas mileage is the most important.
Well, if you want to buy a more powerful SUV, then a V6 engine can produce 270 horsepower. That is a 3.2-liter unit, which will consume significantly more fuel than the four-banger from the starting offer.
Finally, the same power, but much better gas mileage comes from a 2.0-liter turbo-four powertrain. It even creates more torque than V6. On the other hand, a turbocharged engine is towing 4,000 pounds. The V6 will top that with 4,500 lbs.
A nine-speed automatic transmission will be standard for the entire lineup. This gearbox also improves fuel economy and smoothens the drive. The base engine will return 32 mpg on highways and 24 in urban areas. Front wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. Buyers that pick this version will get a rig with higher consumption. Fuel economy will drop by 2 points. A turbo-4 returns the same mileage. Smaller displacement will still bother you with some lags. But, it delivers the same power and slightly lower towing capacity. On the other hand, a V6 will consume 20/29 mpg and 20/27 mpg for FWD/AWD. Pick an off-road Trailhawk version with a different setup, and numbers are dropping to 18/25 mpg.
The range of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee will raise if rumors about the hybrid drivetrain come true. And we believe this could happen next season. Well, the FCA has a mild-hybrid setup for its full-size truck. In the compact crossover class, there are more and more rivals with this option, so it will be tougher to compete for Cherokee only with conventional weapons (engines).
A 2.4-liter unit could get the help of an electric battery to skyrocket the fuel economy. Also, these improvements will be pasted to power output. The hybrid would make the 2020 Cherokee a 200-hp model.
2020 Jeep Cherokee Redesign
Since it is not ready for the next generation yet, the new 2020 Jeep Cherokee will suffer a big redesign. Well, not so big to replace a legendary radiator grille up front. On the other hand, everything else is under revision. Headlights could be narrower. Sportier bumpers and a new set of wheels will be available for the entry-level models. Also, the 2020 Cherokee could grow a bit. Still, it remains a compact crossover. The parent company, FCA, prepares big changes in mid-size class, and with larger Cherokee, they will create more space for the vehicle between it and Renegade.
Interior of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee will also be reconstructed. However, it will keep most of the features we love now. For example, these are exceptional infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, and cargo space behind the second row. By folding it, owners of the Cherokee can create additional 30 cubic feet. If the crossover adds more length, we will see the vehicle with more space inside.
2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
The most exciting unit in the lineup will be the 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. There are more equipped versions with a higher price, but this crossover offers the joy of ride in outskirts. Special tuning of the drive system makes Cherokee ready for off-road adventures. All-terrain tires, skid plates, and special suspension are upgrades we can find if we choose the Trailhawk model.
2020 Jeep Cherokee Prices
The new 2020 Jeep Cherokee will start at the same level as the current version. The company has no space for the price increase. Still, the higher-end models will offer more features, for a higher price. The entry-level model will be Latitude, with a price tag of $26,000. On the opposite end, we will find the Elite version of Trailhawk. Its price sticker is going to be close to $40,000. Regular off-road Trailhawk will cost $35,000.
