2020 Kia Stonic Price, Specs, Hybrid, Changes

The mid-cycle of the 2020 Kia Stonic will refresh the look of the subcompact crossover. It is the smallest vehicle in the lineup, with a 16-inch wheelbase. Kia Soul is 165 inches long, while the Niro is slightly larger with 171 inches of overall length. The new Stonic will be redesigned to lure more buyers. After three years in the market, this vehicle has proven its worth and the Korean company will continue to invest in this lineup.

Stonic’s highest popularity is on the market with the steering wheel mounted on the right side – the UK. However, Kia ruled out the new SUV coming to Australian shores. In the United States, the subcompact slot is already occupied by the Soul. The new 2020 Kia Stonic will compete with Jeep Renegade, Honda HR-V, and Toyota CH-R. Also, there are many European-based companies offering their crossovers in the subcompact segment – Peugeot 2008 and VW T-Cross. Another alternative is the Hyundai Kona.

2020 Kia Stonic Engines

The 2020 Kia Stonic is going to appear in many markets. So, there will be different offers and options available for the subcompact model. Starting from the engine room, we have four different units so far. All of them will be available for the next Stonic. Also, we expect from this vehicle to borrow a hybrid or PHEV drivetrain from its US sibling, Kia Niro.

The smallest displacement for the 2020 Stonic is the inline-three drivetrain. However, a 1.0-liter engine is turbocharged and it returns a respectable amount of power with superb fuel economy. The new Stonic can count on 120 hp and 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque. Other specs of the small unit are pretty respectable. The I3 can reach 185 kmh (115 mph) and sprints to 60 mph in slightly more than 10 seconds. Front-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual gearbox are standard configurations. Fuel economy numbers will be available after the revisit of the engine.

Four-Cylinder Powertrains

The I3 is the smallest engine. There is also a couple of four-cylinder petrol drivetrains, plus the diesel banger. A 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated motor is good for 85 horsepower. Of course, the larger unit will consume more fuel. But, you won’t get more power or faster acceleration. Max speed is 165 kmh and the 0-60 mph acceleration time is 12.5 seconds. A five-speed manual transmission replaces the six-pace box.

The 1.4-liter engine adds 15 hp and it is 7 kmh faster than its sibling. Fuel consumption jumps and the sprint time will save you half of a second before the 2020 Kia Stonic reaches 60 mph (100 kmh). This unit brings back the six-speed gearbox.

The 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine returns 110 ponies and 260 Nm (190 lb-ft) of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox transfers power to front wheels. The turbocharged engine will help Stonic accelerate 0-60 mph in 11 seconds. The diesel unit consumes the same amount of fuel as the I3 petrol version. Max speed is 175 kmh.

2020 Kia Stonic Hybrid

Earlier we learnt the company is considering both hybrid and an electric version of the 2020 Kia Stonic. Well, the first one is more realistic, while the EV Niro is already available in most markets where it is possible. Kia is making a strong impact on the electric market. Not only their compact vehicles are getting hybrid powertrains, but it could happen soon with Sorento SUV and Sedona minivan.

Kia Niro Hybrid combines a 1.6-liter petrol unit with electric batteries to burst 140 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. This is an option for the US, and we believe the company will combine a similar system with a smaller displacement. Less power, but more miles per gallon will make the 2020 Stonic Hybrid a competitor right after its release date. Some rumors are speaking the hybrid will be very powerful and that we can expect 60+ mpg.

2020 Kia Stonic Changes

Kia Soul, Stonic’s closest sibling, entered the new generation. The next crossover will get the larger body and more space inside the cabin. Can we expect something similar from the 2020 Kia Stonic? Hardly. The US crossover is more advanced with all technologies and features. Whatsoever, the popularity of Stonic in the UK and Europe could make the Korean company think about the huge redesign. The arrival of the hybrid engine is the step that promises further evolution.

Prices

The new 2020 Kia Stonic cost from 16,000 pounds in the UK, which is the price we pay for the current model. The company wants to stay competitive by offering an attractive price. Depending on the engine and trim levels, the price can go up to 23,000 pounds. Some trim levels will offer an automatic DCT transmission. Trim levels available in the UK are Stonic 2, Stonic3, Stonic 4, and Stonic Maxx. Of course, there is a new hybrid drivetrain that will also cause some changes both in the compact crossover segment and within the Kia family.
