It looks like the Japanese manufacturer is preparing some nice changes for the 2020 Mazda CX-5. Though introduced a year ago, the second generation of this compact crossover will probably come with novelties already for the third year of production. It looks like this model is about to get a diesel engine for the North American market. Revisions on gasoline engines are expected as well. In terms of styling, we don’t expect bigger changes. Still, we could see some novelties on the inside, in terms of standard equipment. All in all, expect a bunch of nice novelties for the 2020 CX-5.
2020 Mazda CX-5 redesign
In terms of base design characteristics, we definitely won’t see bigger changes. This crossover has been redesign less than two years ago, so there is no way we could see some changes in terms of mechanics and similar things. The 2020 Mazda CX-5 will continue to ride on a new version of the company’s famous SKYACTIVE platform, characterized by utilization of new, lightweight materials and better driving dynamics.
Same goes for styling. The current look is very fresh, completely adapted to the company’s newest design language. So, it seems irrational to make any modification, especially if we consider that this beauty is probably the prettiest model in the class. Still, this doesn’t mean that we couldn’t see few novelties in terms of exterior colors, new wheels design etc.
The interior design is also about to come without bigger changes. We will see the same dashboard layout for sure, though new color schemes are possible, as well as new standard features.
2020 Mazda CX-5 features
We expect to see the same trim level organization as before. So, the base Sport trim will come with standard features like 17-inch wheels, 7-inch touchscreen, 4-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, rearview camera, LED headlights etc. Expect few safety systems as well, like Low-speed forward collision warning and mitigation and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you decide to go for an optional i-Activesence package, you can count on a whole bunch of advanced safety systems, such as lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, upgraded forward collision warning, automatic high beams etc.
A mid-range Touring trim adds several interesting things. Some of the highlights are simulated leather upholstery, heated seats, bigger 19-inch wheels, power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, six-speaker audio etc. If you decide for an optional Preferred package, count on things like a sunroof, Bose audio system, navigation etc.
Finally, there is a Grand Touring trim. This version comes with standard features like leather upholstery, passenger’s power-adjustable seat, driver memory settings, satellite radio, LED foglights and taillights etc. An optional Premium package would add things like head-up display, heated steering wheel, traffic sign recognition and much more.
2020 Mazda CX-5 could get a diesel engine
Oil burners are becoming more and more popular in these days, even among North American drivers, which traditionally prefer gasoline engines. So, it looks like the 2020 Mazda CX-5 will come with a diesel engine in the offer as well. This version is already available in Europe and some other markets. We expect to see the same 2.2-liter engine in the offer. However, latest reports suggest that we could see a mild power boost, so the U.S. version will probably feature a max output of 190 horses, instead of 175.
Gasoline engine lineup could come with changes as well. At the moment, this crossover is available with a single engine choice. It is a familiar 2.5-liter unit which delivers around 185 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. For this update, the company could introduce a new version of this engine, equipped with a turbocharger. This is something that we can already see in a mid-size CX-9 crossover. In this variant, the engine delivers between 230 and 250 horsepower, depending on the engine.
All engines will come in a pair with the same 6-speed automatic transmission.
2020 Mazda CX-5 release date and price
Despite expected changes, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 will probably come in usual time, which would mean somewhere in late 2019. When it comes to price, the current model goes between 24.000 and 32.000 dollars, roughly. The upcoming diesel and turbo gasoline engines will probably add a few thousands more. A competition will be pretty tough. There is a bunch of familiar compact crossovers that already established their position in the market. Some of the class-leaders are models like Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota Rav4 and the Kia Sportage. There are also several other competitive crossovers, like GMC Terrain, Subaru Forester, VW Tiguan etc.
