Recently, Mazda redesigned its CX-3 crossover and launched it as CX-30. Further news is reporting that the company is preparing another major change to the lineup. Currently, the Japanese carmaker is offering already mentioned subcompact CX-30, flagship CX-5, which is a compact SUV, and a full-size CX-9. The Mid-size class spot is vacant and it waits for the 2020 Mazda CX-7 comeback.

The new SUV will follow the latest design language recognizable on all Mazda’s vehicles. Also, the company must make this move to improve its chances in the market. The success of the CX-5 made the Japanese carmaker develop crossover and SUV lineup. Still, they need to complete the squad to get on the line with major players in this class. So, the 2020 Mazda CX-7 jumps into a mid-size segment. The SUV will offer two and three-row layout. The comeback to the US market will happen later this year.
2020 Mazda CX-7 Specs, Engines
The SUV used to get power from a 2.3-liter engine. The next edition requires more power. The 2020 Mazda CX-7 could use the same drivetrain as its smaller and bigger siblings. It is a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four powertrain capable to produce 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. For better capabilities, this drivetrain offers fewer ponies to a full-size CX-9 model. The main advantage of this engine is a lack of lags which always come with turbo engines. Mazda’s engineers cut this to a minimum.
Besides this, the engine offers excellent fuel economy numbers. The 2020 Mazda CX-7 with a 2.5-liter turbo engine would be one of the most fuel-friendly SUVs in the mid-size segment. Well, the towing capacity of 3,500 pounds can’t compete with larger V6 units used by Dodge Durango or Toyota Highlander.

Hybrid
Mazda could finally launch a hybrid engine for its SUV lineup. The company announced an electric model for 2019/2020 season, but it wasn’t still unveiled. Soon, we could see the first appearance of this or a hybrid unit. The 2020 Mazda CX-7 with such drivetrain is going to return around 30 mpg combined. Again, power output and towing capacity are not at the top of the class. Still, the plug-in hybrid setup would allow the CX-7 to use only electric power. The range of batteries will be 30-35 miles. In case the Japanese company announces an EV SUV, the range will go above 200 miles. However, we still don’t know details about the announced all-electric SUV and its position in the lineup.
2020 Mazda CX-7 Redesign
The last time the CX-7 was on the market Mazda’s vehicles used totally different platforms and design languages. Since 2012 a few things changes and Mazda become one of the most stylish carmakers in the market. Its aesthetic design makes all models eye-catching and distinctive. The new 2020 Mazda CX-7 will borrow some solutions from CX-5 and CX-9. On these two we can see a similar design of the front fascia. Large grille is a highlight. Of course, the upcoming SUV will get fresh headlights and minor modifications of the bumper. The new set of wheels is certain. The CX-7 is probably getting 17- or 18-inch rims. The power liftgate is going to be standard, and lights could be integrated on this feature.

Seven Seat Layout and More Interior Features
The new 2020 Mazda CX-7 is going to be a mid-size model. The base units will offer a two-row layout with seating for five persons. It leaves more space for cargo and passengers on back seats. We still don’t know the dimensions of the CX-7 and its cargo volume. When the SUV adds a third row, space will become tighter. Well, reclining second row will create more space for occupants there, and foldable third row increases cargo room. The third row will be suitable only for children.
Technology offer in all Mazda vehicles is on the verge to launch cars and SUVs into a premium division. The CX-7 will get a touchscreen display and all the modern connectivity services. More USB ports and Bluetooth are available as well. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Upper trim levels add a premium Bose audio system. Improved Mazda Connect multimedia system could enter the new generation with more features and voice commands. Well, navigation will remain optional. Lane departure and automatic breaking are there. We can hear that the Japanese company is developing a kind of self-driving system that will reach Level 2 of the autonomous drive.

2020 Mazda CX-7 Release Date and Price
Starting price of the 2020 Mazda CX-7 will be between its two stablemates. The CX-5 starts at $26,000 while the MSRP of the CX-9 is $33,000. So, it will be reasonable to see the CX-7 around $30,000. We will see more when the SUV hits the market. The premiere of the new arrival is set for Los Angeles Auto Show late this year. Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Edge, and Hyundai Santa Fe are alternatives buyer can consider if they are after a mid-size SUV.
