After the big redesign in 2006 Pajero became Montero SUV in the US. Ever since the company didn’t bring any major update for the full-size model. To keep up with competition, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero will have to show the fresh face, latest technology, and new engines. This should be enough to revive the interest in the new Montero. With seven seating spots, it will also offer plenty of space for cargo. Versatile and reliable, the new SUV is going to be the vehicle to watch in 2020.
Spy photos of the new 2020 Mitsubishi Montero are showing some big changes. Although the heavy camouflage is covering the entire body, the new shape is visible. The next-gen SUV brings the new front fascia. Well, the most notable changes are inside the vehicle. Modern and elegant, it will meet expectations of enthusiasts.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Specs
The main source of power is coming from a 3.8-liter V6 engine. It still lacks some power to compete with top models in the full-size segment. This drivetrain is capable to produce 280 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed transmission is standard in most markets. Automatic or manual, it is up to buyers. At some regions, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero will come with a four-speed auto gearbox.
Outside the US, there are more options for the new Montero. The most interesting is a 3.0 unit, currently available only in China. With it, the 2020 Montero will get 230 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. Between these two petrol engines is a 3.5-liter mill, while a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest one in the lineup. It can produce 160 hp and 160 lb-ft, but this is just not enough for a full-size SUV market in the US.
Diesel engines are also available for the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero and the upcoming Pajero. Well, these drivetrains are not coming to North America. Two displacements are coming to other markets – a 2.8 and 3.2. The first one will be able to burst 140 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of twist. The other one is good for 200 hp and 325 lb-ft.
Mitsubishi Outlander is available with a PHEV system in the US. It was a surprise when this SUV appeared for the first time. The 2020 Mitsubishi Montero could follow its steps to bring more buyers. Well, hybrid technology is the future in the automotive industry. All vehicles will become greener. The Japanese company is taking advantage of its partnership with Nissan. These two are sharing technologies and develop some of the hybrids together. One of them will be the new Montero PHEV. Well, we still don’t know what kind of combination will lay under the hood. Whatsoever, the system will boost fuel economy and emission reduction will draw the attention of environmental-friendly drivers.
We are also waiting for updates about new drivetrains. Mitsubishi is still silent, but 270-hp rated V6 is just not good enough for the US market. Other full-size SUVs are producing much more energy. For example, Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia are using V8 units. Ford Expedition comes with a V6 under the hood. But, its twin-turbo system provides 100 ponies more than the Montero’s 3.8 can do. So, the boost of power output is required to survive the tough competition. New engine, probably V8 could help.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Redesign
The new look of the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero will be based on the L200 pickup truck. At least the front fascia. Of course, designers will have a lot of work to tune the visual appearance of a truck for the SUV. Also, there is a new rear end. The upcoming Montero will introduce a fresh architecture with a lot of aluminum in its body. It will make the weight go down and gas mileage up. Spy photos are not unveiling details. Dimensions of the 2020 Montero will remain pretty much the same. The SUV is 193 inches long now. We could see it closer to 200 in.
Inside the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero fans will find a lot of cool and modern features. The Japanese company must work on safety. That is the priority for the new SUV. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be parts of the infotainment system. Optional features include navigation, heating for seats, and three-zone climate control. Upper trim levels are also bringing attractive features, especially with a PHEV model that will come with unique interior layout and dashboard.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Release Date
The new generation of the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero is being tested. So, its release date is close. Well, we still don’t know the company’s schedule. But, Mitsubishi wants to come back to the scene in style, so the new Montero could have a debut at some big car show. We would like to see it in Los Angeles later this year. But, the next-gen SUV could appear later, in Chicago or New York shows.
