2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Facelift

Pajero is not on the US soil for a few years. We can say that Mitsubishi is losing the battle in the SUV segment. But, wait. The new 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero could prove us all wrong. The prototypes of the next-gen full-size sport utility vehicle are already out. But, can we expect the comeback to North America? From the first impressions, yes. Mitsubishi revived its popularity, and now the Japanese company is expanding the lineup. They are now part of the big alliance with Nissan and Renault. Although this partnership exists for 20 years, their prime is now.

The alliance works on joint development of engines and parts. We can see every carmaker’s growth in recent years as a result of this. But now, it is time for one of the toughest task – building a full-size SUV. Well, we can hear that 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero will use the same platform as the pickup truck of this company. That means a lot of similarities between L200 (Triton) and the Pajero. Some other rumors are also mentioning a plug-in hybrid. In this case, we are very skeptical. A full-size model is there to put out a strong output, not to save the fuel. If you are looking for a better fuel economy, check out some smaller model.

2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Redesign

So, the new 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero will be very similar to the L200. We can’t expect from the truck to be turned into an SUV, though. The new pickup offers fresh design and some solutions that could help Pajero achieve better performance off the road. Well, high front end and distinctive fascia are characteristic of a truck. The SUV will get its own style, but it will modify the look of the existing grille, headlights, and bumpers. No radical change is going to happen next season. Large wheels and the rear end also need a redesign. Mitsubishi was lazy, so minor updates in the past 20 years can’t meet the demands of a modern buyer.

Interior

The most demanding buyers will look at every detail. The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero is going to be new on the market, and everything must be perfect. The SUV must meet requirements of younger and older drivers, men and women. It is a tough task, though. The complete overhaul of the cockpit is the first goal for designers. The new Pajero will show some signs of classic styling. But, everything inside the cabin is going to be new and updated. First, Mitsubishi must improve its infotainment system. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Navigation, wireless charging, more USB ports… are just some of the “must have” features.

Furthermore, comfort and safety are good on the current edition that is available outside the US. But, the most important market in the world needs special upgrades and systems. Various alerts and warning systems will be added. Also, spoiled drivers can find many helping services in other vehicles. Luckily, Nissan is already using some autonomous drive features which could be a part of the new 2020 Pajero.

2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Specs

Engines are the major concern for Mitsubishi. Yes, they can borrow some of the powerful units we can find in Nissan SUVs. But, that is not a great idea. The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero can’t be the next Armada. Speaking of this SUV, it also needs a big update if Nissan wants to keep up the pace with Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia.

The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero is probably getting a V6 engine. Its outputs are 225 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. We can find it in Mitsubishi Outlander as well, but for the top GT model. Well, this is not a great output for a big SUV. However, Mitsubishi will definitely use this one for non-US markets. All-wheel drive and six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters are standard. The Japanese company could also choose to enter the market with a 3.8-liter unit. But, this is still a far-fetched story that is unlikely to happen.

Diesel and Hybrid

Diesel engine for the US market? Interesting idea, but hard to happen. Regulations are very strict, and existing units under the hood of Pajero SUV can’t meet emission standards. Whatsoever, the new model will use either 2.8-l or 3.2-l V6 diesel engine in most of the world. Interesting, the Chinese market introduced Pajero with a 2.4-liter diesel unit. This one, slightly tuned, could make its way to the US. But, nothing is certain for now. Outputs of these mills could improve towing capacity and fuel consumption, but the emission remains the stumbling block.

With the hybrid engine, the situation is completely different. The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero needs only a drivetrain and it can easily enter the production. However, this should be the new project with expensive development, and uncertain outcome. Currently, Mitsubishi Outlander is available with a PHEV system that delivers 120 hp. It would be silly to see an SUV of Pajero’s size with such an engine. This morel needs more power, more torque, more of everything.

2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Release Date

The new 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero is not confirmed yet. But, test mules are clear indicators of its new generation. Heavily camouflaged, it is just a matter of time when the new SUV will debut. Pajero will come to the US market again during 2020. We could see it in Europe or Australia a few months before it arrives in North America.
