2020 Nissan Armada Diesel, Interior, Platinum

The 2020 Nissan Armada is the largest SUV by the Japanese carmaker. The company is building a new Infiniti QX80 for the premium segment, but the luxury vehicle is not going to be larger than before. There are no many other vehicles in the class, and the new Armada will have to fight against Toyota Sequoia, Ford Expedition, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon. Most of these models are offering an extended version, but Nissan is offering only one chassis. Still, there is enough space to tow up to 8,500 pounds.

Things could change if the 2020 Nissan Armada Diesel becomes a reality. A full-size SUV built on the same platform as company’s truck, Titan XD, could borrow the drivetrain from its stablemate. However, the Japanese company is still in doubts about the gains of this move. So, everything is still not promising. On the other hand, a mid-cycle refresh is more likely. The vehicle entered a new generation in 2017. Things are not changing too fast in the full-size segment like for other classes. Still, a small update will refresh the interest of potential buyers.

2020 Nissan Armada Drivetrain, Specs

A 5.6-liter V8 engine is the only drivetrain available for the full-size SUV. For now. The 2020 Nissan Armada could add another unit, but we will talk later about a possible diesel engine. Until then, the vehicle sticks to a V8 powertrain that delivers 390 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. That is enough for a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. Still, the fuel consumption is not so friendly. But, you can’t expect that from an SUV that weighs 5,500 pounds. Still, with two-wheel drive Armada is making almost 20 mpg on highways. With all-wheel drive on, the rating drops to 18 mpg, 16 mpg combined, and 14 mpg for city drive.

All numbers could go up if the Japanese engineers found the way to install a 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 unit. The 2020 Nissan Armada diesel, in this case, can count on 335 hp, 555 lb-ft of torque, and the towing capacity over 12,000 pounds. Well, the engine could be downtuned, since the SUV doesn’t need so much power and towing capacity. Still, a diesel engine is used only by a Nissan Titan XD truck, that is positioned between full-size and heavy-duty segment. The company could add an extended version of the SUV to create more space for cargo and not leave the towing capability wasted.

Pro-4X

The Pro-4X is a special set of features. The suite enhances off-road capabilities of models carrying this badge. Unfortunately, Armada is currently not one of these. But, Toyota Sequoia, one of the main rivals, got the TRD Pro version. So, it is up to the competition to respond now. Nissan already has a Pro-4X package available for Titan truck. Small modifications could make it possible for the full-size SUV.

If this happens, the 2020 Nissan Armada Pro-4X would receive some modifications of its exterior and drivetrain system. Special parts made of more resistible materials will extend the lifespan. Skid plates, new bumpers, and unique grille are standard upgrades. For the drive system, there are shocks and suspension for the toughest terrains.

If you choose an all-wheel drive option, you will have to pay $3,000 more. The SL package costs $5,000 more than the SL. Platinum is above $60,000 for 2WD and top of the class version is the 2020 Armada Platinum Reserve 4WD SUV. It is going to cost nearly $70k.

Future

The full-size segment is not the class where most units are sold. But, the profit is excellent so the companies are continuing to produce big rigs. The 2020 Nissan Armada will be a competitive SUV, especially if a diesel engine shows up. On the other hand, we can hear more and more rumors from Toyota and Ford about electrification plan for their models. There are no such speculations about Armada. Nissan will have to start thinking in this direction very soon.
