2020 Nissan Xterra Comeback?

Rumors about the return of the 2020 Nissan Xterra to come true are more likely than ever. There is still a vacant position in the mid-size segment the SUV left in 2014. But Nissan has two models for this class – a five-seat Murano and 7-seat Pathfinder. Yes, but both of them are using a unibody platform. Instead of that one, the Xterra will be built on the body on frame architecture. This will improve SUV’s off-road skills and capabilities. Besides that, the range of Nissan’s models will be wider.

What about the competition? Currently, only Toyota 4Runner is a true BoF mid-size SUV. Ford is bringing Bronco back with better off-road equipment compared to its rivals. Well, not too many buyers will be interested in these rigs, but without competition, all models will have their share of the market. Finally, the Japanese company already made a first step towards the comeback. Chinese buyers can buy a new SUV called Terra. This one will be a base for the upcoming 2020 Nissan Xterra. Of course, the US version will face a lot of modifications, but the shell should be very similar. We still need to figure out the engine options for the off-road model.

2020 Nissan Xterra Redesign

According to rumors and comparison to the Terra SUV, the new 2020 Nissan Xterra will be 192 inches long. That is exactly the same length as Murano, while the Pathfinder is longer. Whatsoever, the wheelbase of the Xterra will be 112 inches, one inch longer than Murano, but still two inches shorter than Pathfinder. One thing is sure, there won’t be space for the third row of seats.

The exterior of the 2020 Nissan Xterra will be pretty much the same as the new Terra. On the other hand, interior equipment will be under a revisit before the SUV steps into the US market. Huge off-road tires will wrap wheels. Protective equipment will make the SUV more aggressive. At the same time, these will extend the life of the Xterra, especially if you are going to spend a lot of time off the road.

One of the major questions is the name of the upcoming SUV. We believe the vehicle will appear as 2020 Nissan Xterra rather than Terra. In this case, the Japanese company will draw the attention of its older fans. What’s more, the new design will lure younger buyers. If it comes as Terra, that would be a new start for a model that was in dealerships by 2014.

Interior

The equipment for the US models and other markets sometimes lead to the name change. We can see different nomenclature for nearly the same vehicles. For Nissan, there is a Frontier truck in the United States, which is available in all other markets as Navara, with different engine and equipment. That is another reason we believe the company will name the new SUV 2020 Nissan Xterra.

US buyers are spoiled and the company needs to meet various requirements for safety, infotainment, comfort. When you compare the same model for the US and other countries, you will see a lot of differences. So it will be with the 2020 Nissan Xterra and Terra SUV. Because of that, we can say with confidence that the upcoming rig will have too many similar features.

2020 Nissan Xterra Engine Options

One of the obvious examples of a different approach is engine room. The Chinese model is offering diesel and petrol drivetrain. Still, both of these have no chance to appear in the US. Efficiency and emission rating can’t meet the requirements of this market. So, we must look at other engines to check if there is any suitable source of power.

A V6 is a choice for most mid-size SUVs we can find. Here, the first engine coming to our mind is a 3.5-liter displacement. Depending on configuration, it usually creates 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Also, the towing capacity is over 6,000 pounds. Still, a different purpose for the 2020 Nissan Xterra could make engineers retune it.

Other options are a new engine, a V8, or turbo-four. The first one is an expensive project. We seriously doubt that Nissan will go after it. A smaller V8 is an excellent option. Still, the Japanese company has only a 5.6-liter unit, which will be too big. A retuning of its 4.5 V8 would be perfect. Turbo-four drivetrain has small chances to appear on the 2020 Nissan Xterra as well. Off-road SUV and turbo engine are not the best pair.

2020 Nissan Xterra Price, Release Date

The new 2020 Nissan Xterra will follow its main rival, Toyota 4Runner with the pricing. That means the new SUV will cost around $35,000. That is the starting price, and the high-end model with Platinum trim level, or Pro-4X package will be priced over $55,000.

The SUV will be available somewhere during 2020. However, the premiere is going to happen later this year or even in the first quarter of the next season.
