2020 Range Rover Sport HST Review, Price

HST edition is the new version for the mid-size premium SUV. This model is slotted between Velar and Range Rover. Its new 2020 Range Rover Sport HST edition will stun everyone with the performance offered by the hybrid drivetrain. The rest of the lineup is also very attractive, starting with SE and HSE trims. Plug-in hybrid setup is available for the second one, as well as for the Autobiography Dynamic. Top of the line version was SVR with a V8 engine and the price tag above $110,000.

The new 2020 Range Rover Sport HST is electrifying the V6 engine currently available for this trim. Well, it is also going to increase the price to the level near the SVR. On the other hand, the Range Rover Sport will gain extra mileage by keeping other outputs at the same level. With this upgrade, the SUV is becoming one of the most interesting vehicles for the next season. It is also a kind of a response to the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE with a hybrid drivetrain.

V6 Engine with Electric Support

The 2020 Range Rover Sport HST will keep the same 3.0-liter petrol engine as the main source of power. This engine is capable to produce 395 h and 406 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid setup is not going to affect these numbers, although we expected a small push for the horsepower rating. Top speed of the gasoline unit is 140 mph. HST hybrid is offering the same max speed and acceleration to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. At the same time, the new drivetrain system will improve fuel economy. Without electric batteries, the Range Rover Sport HST is returning 21 mpg for combined driving and up to 25 mpg for the highway ride. Official results for the new HST hybrid are not released yet, but we believe the urban drive consumption will be much better.

Which Are Other Drivetrain Options?

The entry-level Range Rover Sport models (SE and HSE) are using a 3.0-liter diesel engine. A V6 unit is capable to return 255 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. These numbers are excellent for towing capacity of around 6,000 pounds. Range Rover already offers a hybrid, but the P400 PHEV configuration combining electric drivetrain with a 2.0-liter four-pot unit. It is good for 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque but falls short in acceleration and top speed compared to the 2020 Range Rover Sport HST. There is a lighter setup for the 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine. For the SE and HSE trims, this one is good for 355 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque and needs over 6 seconds for 0-60 mph acceleration.

There are two drivetrains which step up with better numbers than the HST. The first one is Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic that uses a V8 unit. With 520 hp it can count on the max speed of 130 mph, but the acceleration to 60 mph needs 1 second less than the V6 hybrid setup. The other one is the SVR. Well, this one beats the 2020 Range Rover Sport HST in every segment. Top speed is 176 mph and it takes 4.3 seconds for 0-60 mph. You will pay this one $10,000 more than the new HST and it returns only 16 mpg combined.

Through the spokes, you can see red calipers the boost the overall sporty impression.

Inside the 2020 Range Rover Sport HST, we will find premium leather (Windsor) and unique stitching. Bolsters are the same for the shift knob and steering wheel. Suedecloth is on the paddle shifters. Land Rover developed the new Touch Pro Duo system. The infotainment system will offer more features than ever. Double 10-inch screens allow multiple interactions at the same time. Intelligent voice commands are part of this system. Entertaining services are also offering Meridian surround audio with 19 speakers. Drivers can rely on help from a special package of accessories. It will include traffic sign recognition, blind-spot warning, and lane departure alert. The HST trim level also comes with Park Package that brings a 360-degree part camera and rear traffic monitor.

2020 Range Rover Sport HST Price

The non-hybrid edition of the 2020 Range Rover Sport HST will cost ‘only’ $85,000. For the mid-size SUV, even if it is a premium model, it is too much. But, we already got used to the JLR’s luxury offers and prices. The new hybrid setup, with all upgrades, will boost the price to $105,000.

That is $10k less than the top of the range SVR unit. Even the supercharged V8 Autobiography Dynamic trim will be more affordable with the price tag of $90,000. The entry-level Range Rover Sport SE will come with the MSRP just under $70,000.
