2020 Toyota Highlander Release date, Limited, XLE

The Japanese carmaker is updating its SUV lineup and next in the line should be company’s popular mid-size crossover, which should come as 2020 Toyota Highlander. This model has been around for about 18 years.

The original model came in 2000 and since then, we have seen three generations of it. The current model is present since 2013, but it received a facelift a few years ago when we saw an updated styling, as well as some other novelties. The brand-new model will probably come next year, which is pretty much in accordance with the Highlander’s usual production cycle. It is about to get a lot of novelties, which will include both technical and visual improvement.

We are about to see Toyota’s new design language, as well as new TNGA platform and much more. The 2020 Highlander will probably hit the market in the second half of next year.

2020 Toyota Highlander Platform

Let’s start with the most important thing about 2020 Toyota Highlander. The new model is about to get a new architecture, just it is the case with most redesigns. For this occasion, we will see the application of the company’s new TNGA platform. This highly-modular platform can be used for various types of vehicles of different sizes. At the moment, it already underprints the new Camry, as well as the upcoming Rav4. The 2020 Toyota Highlander will have a lot in common with these two models, starting from the architecture, which is characterized by intensive use of light materials, which causes important weight savings. If we can judge by the new Camry’s characteristics, the new crossover will come with significantly improved driving dynamics, which are probably the biggest drawback of the current-generation model. Of course, expect more space on the inside and many other benefits from the new architecture.

2020 Toyota Highlander Exterior Design

Many of us really appreciate all these technical improvements that the new platform is about to bring, but the styling has always been one of the most important things that sell the car. This model in particular always had an attractive appearance. The current model has been updated a few years ago, so it’s no wonder that it still features pretty nice look. For that occasion, we have seen a completely new front fascia, restyled headlights and taillights and much more.

However, the real deal will come with the redesign. The 2020 Toyota Highlander will come with a completely new appearance, which will follow Toyota’s latest design philosophy. In practice, this would mean something similar to what we can see on a new Rav4. The smaller brother was presented recently with a brand-new look and you can easily notice that the new design language includes a lot of sharp lines. Such modern approach will definitely make 2020 Toyota Highlander look very attractive. Expect to see an application of same angular front fascia and headlights, as well as the similar front fascia design with integrated fog lights and bumper. Of course, the new 2020 Toyota Highlander will also get a bunch of its own, unique details, though it seems quite early to speculate about them.

2020 Toyota Highlander Interior Design

Most likely, the 2020 Toyota Highlander will stick to the same design approach as the new Rav4. Unlike new Camry, which comes with a lot of odd curvy lines, the new crossover will feature rather a simple dashboard layout. Just like in its compact brother, it will probably feature a lot straight horizontal lines, which will provide that premium feel. Basically, we expect to see pretty similar instrument cluster, characterized by massive analog gauges. A new tablet-like touchscreen should highlight the center of the dash, which will avoid complete digitalization. A nice analog-digital combination still looks like a better choice. Of course, expect to see few additions compared to Rav4. Also, we should even more impressive materials quality, which seems to get closer to the premium segment with every redesign. Three rows of seating will be a standard feature, though we shouldn’t exclude some sportier two-row version in the offer.

2020 Toyota Highlander Engines

The new architecture is about to bring a few novelties under the hood as well. Depending on the market, the 2020 Toyota Highlander will come with different powertrains. So far, the base engine in North America was a familiar 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit, which is good for about 185 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. The new generation will get an updated version of this engine, which will bring a nice power increase. A new version of the engine has already come already, in the new Rav4 and it now delivers around 205 horses. It comes in pair with a new 8-speed automatic gearbox.

An optional V6 engine has been updated a few years ago, so we don’t expect bigger changes on it. Most likely, it will keep the same figures, which means around 295 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque.

A familiar 2.0-liter turbo inline-four could finally come to North America. This engine has been used for the Chinese market so far. It is good for about 235 horses and also delivers a nice amount of torque, around 260 lb-ft.

Finally, there is a hybrid version. The current model comes in a familiar configuration based on a V6 gasoline engine. This system already marks some impressive numbers. A max power goes around 306 horses, while a combined fuel economy goes around an amazing 29 miles per gallon. Considering these number, we will probably see only minor tweaks, while the core of the system will definitely remain unchanged.

2020 Toyota Highlander Release Date and Price

Though we are still waiting for the official confirmation, this redesign already seems certain. The 2020 Toyota Highlander will most likely come in the second half of the next year, though we could see a premiere on some major car show even before.

When it comes to the price, we are pretty sure that new models will stick to the same range as the current generation. That would mean between 31.000 and 47.000 dollars, roughly. On the other side, the hybrid version goes between 37.000 and 49.000 dollars, depending on the list of standard equipment.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander should continue to be one of the class-leaders, though competition seems to be pretty tough. Some of the rivals are models like Honda Pilot, Kia Sorento, VW Atlas, Ford Explorer etc.
