The XC40 may arriver recently, but it instantly established its position on the market. Despite the recent launch, experts already consider this model one of the best subcompact crossovers around. It stands out for many reasons, but mostly for a luxurious cabin, lots of standard equipment, smooth ride, and efficient engines. This is the smallest crossover in the lineup of the famous Swedish manufacturer, but it keeps the pace with bigger models in many aspects. Therefore, we are pretty sure that there won’t be bigger changes for the 2020 Volvo XC40, which will represent the second production year of the current, first generation.
This model will continue with the same characteristics and features, though it won’t be surprised to see a couple of novelties in terms of new standard equipment or new exterior colors. Still, the overall design will definitely remain the same. Therefore, count on typical arrival date, sometime late in the year.

2020 Volvo XC40 Redesign
In terms of base design characteristics, the 2020 Volvo XC40 will continue in the same way. This model has been introduced recently and represents the Swedish manufacturer in the segment of subcompact crossovers. In terms of mechanics, this model rides on the company’s new CMA platform, which is a joint product of Volvo and Geely. However, it also borrows many design solutions from its bigger siblings, particularly from the XC60. When it comes to the styling, it features a typical Volvo layout.
Design language is shared with other crossovers in the lineup, which was practically introduced with the flagship XC90 and slightly modernized with younger XC60. Of course, the XC40 continued with further improvement of aesthetics, so you can notice a couple of distinctive details on it. The overall shape is typical SUVish. This crossover keeps the roofline pretty straight, which brings benefits in terms of cargo volume and overall practicality. Given the fact that we are talking about a very fresh model, we don’t count on any important change. Anything more than a couple of new color options will be a surprise.

2020 Volvo XC40 Interior
This is probably the strongest point of this small crossover. The XC40 set some standards for the segment. Currently, we aren’t sure that any other subcompact crossover can match its cabin quality. It comes not only with lots of hi-end materials, but also with amazing styling solutions, directly inspired by bigger siblings. The cabin feels pretty open-air and leaves impression of a much more spacious cabin than actually is. That doesn’t mean that the cabin is tight. It is pretty spacious, though the second row is typical for the segment and won’t be so comfortable for taller passengers. On the other side, front seats are massive and supportive, perfect for long journeys.
The weak point of this cabin is cargo volume. Despite pretty horizontal roofline, the cargo area actually features below-average volume, mainly because of a short rear overhang. You can count on around 47 cubic feet of total cargo space.

2020 Volvo XC40 Features
When it comes to standard features, the 2020 Volvo XC40 will be fairly well equipped. We don’t expect to see many changes in for the next year, though a couple of novelties seem possible. The current base model comes with goodies like a 9-inch touchscreen, eight-speaker audio system, satellite radio, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and few more things. In higher trims, you can also get things like a panoramic sunroof, navigation, a cooled glove box, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, wireless charging etc.
Typically for Volvo, the list of standard safety features is very long. Base models are equipped with things like rearview camera, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, oncoming lane mitigation, road departure mitigation, driver drowsiness monitoring, rear collision warning etc. Of course, there is a bunch of optional features as well. Some of them are adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, active bending headlights, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors and much more.
2020 Volvo XC40 Engines
We don’t expect to see bigger changes under the hood for the next year either. The current model comes with two engines in the offer and the 2020 Volvo XC40 should continue in the same way. That would mean that the base model will be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine which is good for about 187 horsepower. The same engine comes in a tuned version that delivers around 250 horsepower.
In both cases, you can count on pretty good fuel economy. The base engine is particularly good in this aspect. It returns around 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. These are some of the best results in the class.

2020 Volvo XC40 Release Date and Price
Considering that there are no bigger changes to come, the 2020 Volvo XC40 should arrive late in the year. The price will remain the same, which means around 34.000 dollars for the base model.
