2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport, Release date

Although introduced a year ago, this mid-size crossover is about to come with some changes as 2020 VW Atlas. The new crossover is the largest vehicle that rides on the company’s modular MQB platform. It is designed especially for the North American market, to compete with a bunch of renowned mid-size crossovers on the market. The initial launch seems to be very successful, so the company is about to introduce some novelties in an about a year/year and a half. If we can judge on the latest reports, we are about to see a hybrid version soon, which seems pretty logical, considering that key competitors have electrified version in their offer for a pretty long time. It looks like the new system will be very advanced and very powerful. Besides new powertrain, there is a chance to see some minor tweaks in terms of styling as well.

2020 VW Atlas Gets a New Hybrid Powertrain

The most anticipated novelty for the 2020 VW Atlas is definitely a new hybrid powertrain. Though we still don’t have official details, it looks like the new version will be based on a familiar 3.6-liter V6 engine, which is good for about 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque.

This engine will get a huge help from a couple of two very potent electric motors, one for each axle. At the front, we will see a 54-horsepower, while the rear axle will get a more powerful 114-horsepower unit. Due to different peak, a max output should go around 355 horsepower, which should be enough to provide some very impressive numbers in terms of acceleration. For example, 0-60 time should go around 5.5 seconds, while a top speed should be around 130 mph. Besides plenty of power, we expect to see a decent all-electric range, probably around 26 miles.

2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport

A new hybrid powertrain will be offered exclusively for the new version of this mid-size crossover, called 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport. Compared to the base model, it will come with several modifications. First of all, the company will remove the third row of seating. This model will be shorter compared to the standard three-row version. The new body will be around 191 inches long and 68.5 inches tall. Besides dimension changes, the new version will come with a bunch of unique visual details. The face of the 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport looks pretty much the same, though you can notice a slightly reshaped bumper. Also, there are massive wheel flares, which accentuate crossover’s sporty character. The biggest difference is probably at the rear end, where the new version comes with the reshaped roofline and a massive spoiler.

2020 VW Atlas Design

While the new two-row version is about to come with plenty of exciting novelties, base three-row models will continue in the pretty much same way. Though some reports suggest a mild refresh along with this introduction of a new model. Still, we are pretty sure that this won’t happen. This will be the third year of production, which seems too early for VW’s standards. This company rarely makes updates, and when it does, you cannot see anything but minor, barely notable tweaks. Same goes for the interior design, where 2020 VW Atlas is about to keep the same dashboard layout. On the other side, we could see novelties in terms of new standard features, though even these changes will be quite minimal.

2020 VW Atlas Engines

Except for a new hybrid powertrain, the rest of the engine lineup will remain unchanged. This crossover comes with two gasoline units in the offer.

The base model features a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four unit. It is good for about 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

On the other side, there is an optional V6 unit. As we already mentioned, it features a displacement of 3.6-liter and a max power of 276 horses and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both units use the same 8-speed automatic transmission.

2020 VW Atlas Release Date and Price

We expect 2020 VW Atlas Release to hit the market sometime in the second half of the next year. The new Cross Sport will probably have its premiere on some of the major car earlier in the year (the version at the 2018 New York Auto Show was a concept). The price should remain in the same range. This would mean between 31.000 and 49.000 dollars, though a new hybrid version will probably have a higher starting price.

Competition in this segment is pretty tough. Some of the class-leaders are models like Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Kia Sorento, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer and others.
