The second generation of the coupe-like SUV by BMW is heading to the mid-cycle redesign. There are already spy photos of the upcoming SUV. But, there is a strong belief that the Bavarian company will launch it as the 2021 BMW X6. Also, the same year they will present the all-new M package with bonus features and extra power. The carmaker is giving some time to its all-new X7 full-size SUV to shine before they hit the market again with new models.
Spy photos are there to fire up the imagination of the hard-core fans. The SUV is already rendered and it doesn’t look bad. However, the company has the final word about its look. From what we see on spy photos, the dimensions remain the same, and the 2021 BMW X6 is not launching the new generation, as some expected. On the other hand, we don’t know yet what lays under the covers and inside the vehicle. So, we will leave these door open to such an outcome.
2021 BMW X6 Specs
There is absolutely no reason for BMW to change the engine lineup for its coupe-SUV. So, we will have two petrol drivetrains and each of these will offer two configurations. The base model comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that is capable to produce 305 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Buyers will choose between sDrive and xDrive. The difference? The first one sends power to rear wheels and the other one to all four corners. An eight-speed automatic transmission is very smooth, but the start/stop system could be annoying. That is what the BMW has to improve for the new X6.
Top trims are using a 4.4-liter V8 engine. Also turbocharged, this one is good for 450 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. It distributes power through the same transmission, but only to all wheels (xDrive AWD). The other configuration of this engine will be available for the 2021 BMW X6 M model.
Besides these two, the SUV also brings diesel units for non-US buyers. The xDrive30d is a 3.0-liter V6 creating 255 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. The xDrive40d setup of the same unit adds 55 hp and 50 pound-feet.
2021 BMW X6 M
The 2021 BMW X6 M is under development. The current version is using a 4.4-liter V8 engine, which should remain the same for the upcoming model. However, the new tuning will make it burst over 600 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Currently, the V8 puts out 570 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. Converted to 0-60 time, it is 4.2 seconds. The new X6M will drop this time under 4. The European version is offering a 3.0-liter turbodiesel powertrain. In this case, the outputs are 380 hp and 550 pound-feet. This combo needs 1 second more for 0-60 mph acceleration than the US version.
Redesign and Changes
We had huge expectations from the model for 2020. However, the company will likely move the big redesign for 2021 MY. Then, we could see even an all-new model and the third generation. Well, the Bavarian company is already giving clear hints about this SUV. If we get lucky enough, it will be finished for the next season.
Spy photos are indicating fans can see some radical cuts. First of all, the camo is very thick and it covers the part we expect updates the most. Well, the 2021 BMW X6 will keep its well-known coupe-SUV look, which is the main advantage. On the other hand, its interior is suffering. There is no room for the third row. Even passengers in the second row don’t have plenty of headroom. It is not going to be changed for the 2021 MY. On the other hand, designers will bring more features and advanced equipment to keep occupants in the first row more than happy. Navigation, premium infotainment with loud audio system, and Apple CarPlay connectivity are more than enough for some owners.
2021 BMW X6 Release Date, Price
The 2021 BMW X6 is not among the best-selling SUVs in the premium mid-size class. However, chiefs are not expecting such a thing. It gives the versatility to the lineup and positions the company to the highest tiers in rankings. The X6 will arrive somewhere next season. The Bavarian carmaker will choose a European auto show for the premiere, while the X6M is going to debut in the US. It will probably happen in LA late in 2021.
After the redesign, we expect to see the new price for the 2021 BMW X6. Unfortunately, changes will make this premium SUV more expensive. But, the price jump is not going to be too huge. We believe that BMW is thinking about $65,000. A V8 model will cost above $80,000. With extras and even more premium options, the price hits the six-digit values. Add an M package, and prepare at least $115,000.
