2021 Dodge Durango Returns To BoF Platform

According to the latest reports, the next-generation 2021 Dodge Durango will move back to a body-on-frame platform. Those are the latest news about the model that is currently a mid-size crossover that shares most of its parts with Jeep Grand Cherokee. As you probably already know, the new Grand Cherokee will switch to Alfa Romeo’s platform. On the other side, the new Durango will go in a different way.

Moreover, it looks like it will become bigger and much more capable, as the latest reports are suggesting it could become a full-size SUV. FCA definitely needs a vehicle of this type, in order to compete with rivals and their models like Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe. At this point, everything is just a rumor, so take the following paragraphs with a reserve. According to them, the 2021 Dodge Durango redesign will happen already in the next year and it will be some pretty significant changes.

2021 Dodge Durango redesign

2021 Dodge Durango Redesign

Without any doubt, this platform switch is by far the biggest novelty for the 2021 Dodge Durango redesign. Once a BoF SUV, the Durango switched to a unibody platform with the last redesign. Nowadays, it looks it’s coming back to its roots, despite the fast-growing popularity of crossovers. The new Durango will be a genuine SUV and the company already has a platform prepared.

Of course, we are talking about Ram 1500’s new architecture, which brings improvements in various aspects, including ride quality, performances, efficiency etc. Therefore, we have no doubt that the new 2021 Dodge Durango will rely on the same mechanics. This also indicates changes in size. The new model will be notably bigger, a genuine full-size SUV, which will compete with models like Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition etc. FCA definitely needs a vehicle of this kind in its lineup.

Exterior

Despite switching to a unibody platform, the current generation of this nameplate kept the quite rugged and boxy look. Therefore, we don’t expect some radical changes, a least in terms of the basic aesthetical approach. Still, keep in mind that the new model will be much bigger, which indicates some slight changes in proportions. Of course, we count on a typical wagon-like body style, which will provide excellent functionality and lots of space inside the SUV.

On the other side, new aesthetics will play an important role when competing with arch-rivals. Therefore, we presume that FCA won’t experiment too much and that the 2021 Dodge Durango will feature pretty much the same face as the new Ram 1500. In practice, this means no more crosshair grille, but we have to say that the new truck looks amazing, even though there it doesn’t feature the famous grille layout anymore. More details will be known once we see first 2021 Dodge Durango spy photos.

Interior

The new model will be much bigger and the biggest benefits will come in terms of the 2021 Dodge Durango interior design. Although the current model is already pretty spacious for the class, the new model will come with significant size increase, so we can count on standard three rows of seats and all three should be pretty generous in terms of legroom. The cargo area should be spacious as well.

Ram 1500 interior

Of course, we count on a new cabin layout as well. Most like, it will be quite similar to the Ram 1500, at least when it comes to the dashboard design. The new truck features the best-looking cabin in the class, so we presume it will be nice enough for the segment of full-size SUVs as well. Not only that it looks nice, but the overall interior quality seems impressive. Highest trims are even comparable with premium brands. A full load of tech features, including a new 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, is expected as well.

2021 Dodge Durango Engines

When it comes to powertrain, we count on three or four engine options at least. Base models will probably feature a good-old 3.6-liter V6. Of course, we also count on Hemi engines. A smaller 5.7-liter V8 will be available for sure. It delivers around 395 horsepower, which seems like a perfect measure for a vehicle like this. Still, there is a chance to see a bigger 6.4-liter unit in the offer as well. Some reports even suggest a hi-performance 2021 Dodge Durango SRT with the mightful 6.2-liter engine.

All gasoline engines will come with a new eTorque system, which improves efficiency for a bit. Still, those who want to get a really great gas mileage would probably go for a diesel engine. Fortunately for them, the new model should be available with the 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel as well.

2021 Dodge Durango Release Date and Price

The new model is expected to come sometime in the next year, probably in the second half. When it comes to the price, base models should go somewhere between 45.000 and 50.000 dollars.
