2021 Ford Ecosport Review: USA, Price, Colors, Interior

The segment of subcompact crossovers is one of the most crowded segments in today’s automotive industry, especially when it comes to mainstream brands. Therefore, it looks like the Blue Oval company could have done more, as currently offers a pretty outdated EcoSport. Although it was launched in North American just two years ago, this generation has actually been around since 2012 and sold in all other parts of the world. A very small number of updates were made for that launch, so it’s no wonder that it doesn’t compete particularly well with other models in the segment. Unfortunately, the 2021 Ford Ecosport comes with minor changes only. It gets some minor styling tweaks, while there are also few novelties in terms of standard equipment. The overall design remains the same.

Still, this small crossover has a couple of strong points. Besides the good maneuverability, it also offers quite decent cargo volume, while the infotainment system is one of the bests in this segment. Also, you may count on a quite affordable price.

In terms of base design characteristics, not too many things have changed since the initial launch eight years ago. Mechanically, this is still pretty much the same and given the model’s age, it’s no wonder that handling and overall driving characteristics aren’t on par with much younger rivals. The ride isn’t too comfortable either. The EcoSport seems okay for daily commuting but if you plan to go on a highway a lot, better check some other small crossovers, such as Mazda CX-30 or Hyundai Kona, which are far better in this aspect.

On the other side, the styling still looks okay. Although it doesn’t follow the brand’s latest design language, the current model still looks nice, mostly because of the 2017 refresh, which has brought a completely new front face, with a new grille, headlights etc. The 2021 Ford Ecosport continues in the same way, although there are smaller tweaks in terms of visual packages.

Interior

Ford never impresses with interior quality and the 2021 Ford Ecosport is no exception. Still, the cabin actually looks more than okay. The dashboard looks nice, while materials are pretty much typical for this segment of cars. Still, the aforementioned competitors are once again far superior in this aspect. Also, we don’t like the fact that base models aren’t particularly generous with standard equipment but we will get on that in a moment.

On the other side, there is really nothing to complain about in terms of space. The cabin seems pretty decent in this aspect. Generally, four average-sized passengers should be able to accommodate comfortably. When it comes to the cargo area, you may count on about 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back row and 50 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Features

When it comes to standard equipment, base models aren’t particularly generous. The list of standard features includes a small 4.2-inch infotainment screen, six speakers, a Wi-Fi hot spot and a couple of USB ports. Fortunately, there is much more you can get on higher trim levels. Some of the highlights are things like push-button start, proximity keyless entry, automatic climate control, a moonroof, and ambient lighting, as well as tech goodies like an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, HD Radio, navigation etc.

In terms of safety, all models come standard with a rearview camera only. Additionally, you can get goodies like blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers etc.

2021 Ford Ecosport Engines

There are no changes under the hood for the 2021 Ford Ecosport. Therefore, you may count on two familiar engine options. Base models come with a small 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, which delivers around 123 horsepower. It struggles at higher speeds but seems capable enough for daily commuting. The optional 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine seems like a much better choice. It runs smoother, while its 166 horsepower provides much quicker acceleration. Both engines come in pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which does a pretty good job.

The base engine returns 27 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. That may seem okay but most rivals are actually better. The optional engine offers a similar economy on the highway but it is notably thirstier in the city, where it returns just around 23 miles per gallon.
