Once upon a time, there was a super-huge SUV, known as the Excursion. That was in the early 2000s but the interesting project didn’t last for too long. After five years or so, this large vehicle was discontinued, due to slow sales. However, times are changing and the demand for SUVs is bigger than ever. Therefore, the Blue Oval company feels it’s time to take another try. According to the latest reports, we are about to see a Super Duty-based SUV once again. The 2021 Ford Excursion has been rumored and if we can trust the latest reports, Ford will use the same formula as for the original model, which in practice means – the bigger, the better.
At this point, we don’t know too many details about it, but we may presume that the new model will be heavily based on the F-250 pickup truck. We could see it already in the next year.
2021 Ford Excursion Design
In terms of base design characteristics, the new model is expected to have a lot of things in common with Super Duty trucks. This was the case with the original model and this should be the case with the 2021 Ford Excursion as well. In practice, this means that the new model would feature the same mechanics as the F-250 pickup truck and also very similar proportions. In terms of size, this would mean a pretty large vehicle, notably bigger than already huge Expedition max, which measures almost 132 inches in the wheelbase.
If we consider that the original model measures more than 137 inches between the axles, it’s not hard to imagine how huge the 2021 Ford Excursion would be. It definitely wouldn’t be the most maneuverable vehicle around, but enormous amounts of interior space is a certain thing.
2021 Ford Excursion Styling
Of course, one of the first things that come to mind about the 2021 Ford Excursion is the styling. At this point, we can only rely on rumors and they say that the new SUV will feature the same aesthetics as Super Duty truck models. This primarily refers to the front end, which should be pretty much the same as on the F-250 model. You may count on the same face, with the same headlights, grille and other parts.
On the other side, the rest of the body will be designed in a typical SUV manner, with a common wagon-like body. Of course, we also count on a couple of distinctive details, something that would be reserved for this SUV only. As we already mentioned, the 2021 Ford Excursion will be a pretty large vehicle, notably bigger compared to the current biggest models in the class, such as SUVs like Ford Expedition Max, Chevy Suburban etc.
Interior
In this aspect, we don’t expect surprises. Of course, this refers to the dashboard and overall aesthetical approach. There’s no doubt it will be pretty much the same as in Ford’s Super Duty trucks. In practice, this means functionality over style, which is something Ford practices in the Expedition as well. This would mean a pretty basic dashboard design, with simple shapes and mostly hard but durable materials. Of course, we have no doubt that higher trims will come with notable upgrades in this aspect, with finer materials and more opulent cabin.
Still, the most amazing thing about this cabin will be interior space. Given the expected wheelbase and overall length, we expect nothing but tons of legroom in all three rows, as well as on enormous cargo volume. It is still early for the exact numbers but we have no doubt they will be pretty impressive.
2021 Ford Excursion Engine
When it comes to the powertrain, things are pretty clear here. The 2021 Ford Excursion is expected to come with the same gasoline engine that has been introduced recently in Super Duty trucks. Of course, we are talking about a new 7.3-liter V8 engine, which seems more than capable enough to run this huge vehicle smoothly and with ease. The engine is rated at 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, which promises pretty amazing performances.
Some reports suggest we may also see a diesel version of the 2021 Ford Excursion. Of course, we are talking about the famous 6.7-liter turbodiesel, which has been updated recently and now delivers an impressive 1.050 pound-feet of torque. At this point, it is hard to say how big are chances to see this unit under the hood of 2021 Ford Excursion.
Release Date
You can find a lot of reports that suggest the new SUV could hit the market already in the next year. However, the 2021 Ford Excursion is nothing more than speculation at this point.
