2021 Ford Expedition Max Review: Platinum, Limited, Price, XLT

The 2021 Ford Expedition Max is here. It represents the fourth production year of the current generation and brings no bigger changes. The overall design remains the same and this will continue to be one of the biggest SUVs on the market. Still, the Blue Oval company has presented new sets of wheels for all trim levels, while there are also novelties in terms of standard and available features, especially in terms of safety. Other than that, things are pretty much the same as in the last year’s model.

Therefore, you may count on a familiar layout, which still has so many great things to offer, despite that the competition is getting stronger every day. This is still one of the biggest on most comfortable vehicles you can find, while it also offers a generous amount of cargo space. Furthermore, there is a capable but also efficient V6 engine, which offers some obvious benefits compared to direct rivals.

When it comes to base design characteristics, the 2021 Ford Expedition Max brings no important changes. It continues to ride on the same platform as the F-150 and to use the same amount of lightweight materials, such as aluminum and HSS. That’s the reason why it’s still notably lighter compared to rivals. With more than 131.5 inches in wheelbase, it is certainly one of the biggest SUVs you can find on the market. While this long wheelbase may be beneficial in terms of space, it also makes this SUV not particularly maneuverable in tight spaces.

The styling remains pretty much the same too. We already mentioned new wheels and other than that, things are pretty much the same. The 2021 Ford Expedition Max will continue with the same design, which is largely the same as in the standard model, except for the stretched wheelbase and rear end. On the other side, the front part of the vehicle is nearly identical and still looks relatively fresh on the market.

Interior

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind about this SUV is the passenger space. With such a long wheelbase, it’s no wonder that the 2021 Ford Expedition Max is still one of the most spacious models in the class. It offers nearly 44 inches of legroom in the first row, while the second one is good for more than 42. Still, the third row is actually the one that gives a perfect picture of how spacious this SUV is. It offers more than 40 inches of legroom. For comparison, that’s more compared to the first row of BMW X7! When it comes to cargo space, you may count on 36 cubic feet behind the third row, 79.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum of 121.5 cubic feet.

On the other side, the main complaint about this cabin goes to the dashboard design and materials. The former looks too truckish for the segment, as it’s largely the same as in the F-150. The overall quality is good but we don’t like the fact that even the highest trim levels are full of plastic surfaces.

Features

The biggest change in terms of features is that the Co-Pliot360 Assist is now available as an option on the XLT trim. Other than that, things are pretty much the same. So, base models come equipped with goodies like an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, voice recognition, four USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Additionally, you can get things like two third-row USB ports, wireless device charging, a household-style power outlet, navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, HD Radio, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

2021 Ford Expedition Engine

Things under the hood have also remained the same. Therefore, you may count on a well-known 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, which puts out around 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. With such power and torque, it’s no wonder that driving dynamics are great and that this V6 engine moves the SUV with ease. If you pick the range-topping Platinum model, the max output goes up to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. In both cases, the power is sent via 10-speed automatic transmission, to either rear or all wheels.

When it comes to fuel economy, you may count on about 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, which is pretty good for the class. Models with AWD systems are usually thirstier and return around 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.
