FCA is preparing the largest Jeep SUV ever. After the comeback of the truck, the next priority is the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer. The SUV will be based on the Ram 1500. The company is even testing it with a bed. But, the one-piece chassis is unveiling this is a new way of camouflaging. The new Wagoneer will have a slightly shorter wheelbase than the pickup truck. We can also notice the independent rear suspension setup. The production of the new model will start in 2021, together with its close sibling Grand Wagoneer.
This is going to be a comeback of the legendary vehicle which was discontinued in 1991. Back then, the vehicle returned a very poor fuel economy. More versatile and sportier SUVs entered production and the Chrysler company decided not to develop the new generation. Grand Wagoneer had an unsuccessful comeback in 1993. Now, more than 25 years later, the company officially confirmed the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. However, the FCA didn’t give us too many clues. Spy photos are showing the big rig, and experts already foresaw this coming. Jeep will now have a full-size SUV.

The automaker is trying to fool us with the truck-looking SUV. But, the legacy of Wagoneer is very strong and its fans know everything about all previous editions. And the future too. Ever since the company announced the comeback, they are trying to find more details. Now, with the strange truck is cruising on the streets, but the FCA can’t hide everything. The one-piece body shows the bed is not detached from the cabin, which means the bed could be turned into a cabin pretty easily.
Wagoneer was one of the longest runs in Jeep’s history. It had few trademark features, and definitely one of them is a paintjob. An iconic brown graphic must be back. No other vehicle ever came with such combination of colors. Furthermore, these wood accents will be inside the cabin as well. However, the vehicle is going to be modernized. Expect all the latest technologies Jeep is offering over the range. That includes the Uconnect infotainment. But, navigation, wireless charging, and a large 12-inch screen will remain optional.
Most big rigs in the market are using V8 engines. Ford Expedition is an exception with a high-output turbocharged V6. It is certain that FCA will offer its new product with larger units. They have two reliable and powerful drivetrains which will perfectly suit the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer. The first one is a 5.7-liter V8 with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. But, the automaker could set the challenge to all its rivals by installing its largest engine under the hood of the new SUV. That is a 6.4-liter Hemi powertrain capable to produce 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. This is exactly what fans want.
Wagoneer was well-known for its high outputs. It was one of the highlights of the vehicle. A smaller V8 will be there only to improve the range and offer a more affordable configuration. However, the Hemi engine will bring back memories with more than 475 ponies under the bonnet. The fuel economy is not the best, but it is better than Wagoneer’s predecessor returned. A 6.4 will be good for 15-16 mpg combined through an AWD. An eight-speed automatic transmission is the standard and towing capacity of the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer will be around 8,000 pounds.
Like its closest sibling, Ram 1500 truck, the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer will also use an EcoDiesel engine. We are pretty sure this is going to happen, especially with Ford and GM preparing to add their latest diesel units to biggest SUVs in lineups. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 is capable to produce 260 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. It will get the full power, not like for the Grand Cherokee, where EcoDiesel is returning less energy. With this engine, the fuel economy and towing capacity will get a boost. The new Wagoneer will be able to haul over 10,000 pounds while consuming 22-23 mpg.
The new 2021 Jeep Wagoneer could even become a hybrid. Ram 1500 truck is offering a mild-hybrid engine. However, this configuration is not boosting the power, but only the fuel economy. Also, the minor improvement is just a good sign for future development. The full-size SUV could introduce the new technology with larger electric batteries and better outputs.
2021 Jeep Wagoneer Release Date
The comeback of the legendary SUV was expected next year. However, the company officially confirmed the production is starting in 2021, both for Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The SUV will have tough competition when it arrives. Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe and Suburban are main domestic threats. Japanese carmakers are also very popular on the market. Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada are very capable models. Hyundai is the fastest-growing brand in the USA and soon the Korean automaker will deliver its new model – Grandmaster full-size SUV.
