2021 Lexus GX Spy Photos, Interior, Hybrid, Rumors

There is a question mark above the future of the 2021 Lexus GX. This is an oversized mid-size SUV that quite popular in the USA. However, its non-premium sibling, Toyota 4Runner, is always a better option if you want to get dirty. But, both models need a significant overhaul to stay competitive in the fierce market. The GX is larger, but the Lexus RX is the best-selling model in the luxury class. It is slightly smaller, but also offers three rows of seats and a hybrid engine with better fuel economy and more power.

One of the clues we find that 2021 Lexus GX could go through a redesign is the non-US version. We can compare the premium SUV to the Land Cruiser Prado. Recently, spy photos of the camo model leaked, and we are listening about the new generation of the base Land Cruiser as well. The GX could take advantage of it since the current series dates from 2009. The company launched the new version for the 2020 season with some cool updates. But, nothing but the complete redesign is going to satisfy buyers.

2021 Lexus GX vs 2020 YM

The new model for the upcoming season is bringing some significant changes. We know the company had to update the SUV to stay competitive, but fans will always look for more. When the model is ten years old, there is a ton of reasons for that. The new 2020 YM updated the spindle grille and added an Off-Road package. Safety System+ is now standard for all trim levels.

But, if we want to get dirty, the 4Runner can do the job. So, we won’t have to spend extra for luxury features, and the price gap is significant. The new GX starts at $53,000, which is above the level we pay for the TRD Pro version of the non-premium SUV. So, it seems better to wait for the next-gen model arriving probably as 2021 Lexus GX.

Changes We Expect

The new 2021 Lexus GX will be complexly new. Updated grille for the current version could be even more angular in the future. Also, the company is going to revisit its nose and interior. Information about the upcoming generation is not available yet. But, as said, there is a possibility for discontinuation. However, at this moment, we believe the company is not going to do that. There are still buyers looking for such SUVs, and the next GX could see the cut of production amount.

New Engines

Current GX is using a 4.6-liter V8 engine that is producing 300 hp. Just for the comparison, a 3.5-liter V6 for Lexus RX can make 290 hp, while the hybrid variant of the same model is adding 20 ponies. The gap is not so big. But, take a look at fuel economy numbers. GX will return 16 mpg, while the RX is the worst variant can’t consume more than 21 mpg. The hybrid system returns 31 mpg in the city. Of course, you will lose some off-road and towing capabilities.

But still, this is the main reason why we can expect the new engines when the 2021 Lexus GX hits the market. For a while, we can hear about the hybrid version. Well, V8-based configuration is hard to build. Currently, only a few models are offering a mild-hybrid system. Instead, the new GX could get a high-output plug-in hybrid drivetrain based on a V6 unit. Ford used this recipe for its premium Lincoln Aviator and got 400 hp. Fans of the GX won’t have anything against such an outcome for their favorite.

When Will the 2021 Lexus GX Be Available?

The new GX for the 2020 season is out. So, the next edition has some time for development. We are in the last quarter of 2019, and there are no clues about the upcoming SUV. Test mules are not out yet, and the company is not confirming this model yet. On the other hand, leaking sources are informing the development is ongoing.

If we can rely on the info outside the US, then the possibility of the next-gen 2021 Lexus GX arriving soon is pretty likely. The new Land Cruiser Prado was caught testing. Still, there is a new version of Toyota’s premium full-size SUV on the way, so various tests are ongoing all across the planet. Again, we choose to believe in the redesign and the new generation of the GX.

2021 Lexus GX Diesel

After the latest statement, the chances of the 2021 Lexus GX diesel could be written off. The company is not delivering such a model to the US. The GX also appears in Russia, so this version could get a new engine. But, Toyota, the parent company, turns to the greener sources of power for its big rigs, including 4Runner, Tacoma and Tundra trucks, and GX premium SUV. So, the hybrid is more likely to happen, even in some base variant.
