The 2021 Lincoln Navigator remains the flagship SUV. Forget about all new additions (Aviator, Nautilus, Corsair). Navigator is still a king of the class and the vehicle that offers the most. The SUV suffered the last update in 2018 when the company launched the new generation with cool Black Label themes. The upcoming version is replacing the existing templates to refresh the offer. This is not the only change on the big rig, though. We are looking for more news about the engine room.
The hybrid version is still a dream. Lincoln is owned by Ford, a company that invests a lot of money in electrification. The plan is to create configurations big enough for the full-size models – 2021 Lincoln Navigator, Ford Expedition, and F-150 truck. Meanwhile, a new diesel unit is possible for SUVs, since it is already under the hood of the pickup. Until this happens, Navigator will stick to the existing twin-turbo V6 setup.
Base Engine and Performance
The only available engine for the 2021 Lincoln Navigator is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo engine. While most rivals are choosing a V8, Ford’s engineers are using a high-output V6 mill for their big SUVs. However, Navigator does not lack any power. On the other hand, a 5.0-liter V8 unit can jump in any time. A V6 is lighter but still manages to produce 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed transmission provides a better fuel economy, and Navigator will return 19 mpg. Most rivals are around 16-17 mpg. Finally, the SUV is best in the luxury class when we come to towing. Its towing capacity is 8,700 pounds. Well, that is 600 pounds less than the Ford Expedition can do.
2021 Lincoln Navigator Diesel
The towing capacity could go up to 10,000 pounds, but only if the company decides to go with a diesel unit. Ford recently added a 3.0-liter Powerstroke mill to its portfolio. The first impressions are positive, and the company expects from the F-150 truck to reach 1 million sales in 2020. However, the carmaker also wants to use a turbodiesel engine in other vehicles. Other big models are waiting for the decision, and Navigator is one of the first in the queue.
If this happens, the SUV can count on 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. We don’t know if the towing capacity and fuel economy numbers will be the same as for the pickup truck, but the boosts compared to the V6 petrol unit are certain. On the other hand, this is not the long-time solution, since diesel engines are finding it harder to exist in the US market.
Navigator Hybrid
The replacement is not ready yet, but everybody knows hybrid and electric sources of power will replace diesel engines. Fuel economy boost pays the cost in towing capacity. But, it is just a matter of time when will the technology take another step forward and jump over this obstacle. We believe it will take a couple of more seasons, but the 2021 Lincoln Navigator could introduce some mild-hybrid system for a debut.
New Themes for the 2021 Lincoln Navigator Black Label
One of the major changes for the 2021 Lincoln Navigator is coming for its top trim level. If you decide to spend $100k for the luxury SUV, that is not all you will have to do. The new Navigator is going to introduce fresh themes for the Black Label trims. Currently, there are Destination and Chalet (also available on some other models), while the Yacht Club is the unique one and available only for Navigator. The new SUV replaces all three of them. New themes are Ceramic Pearl, Pristine White, and Infinite Black.
Release Date and Competition
There are no too many other full-size luxury SUVs out there. The price of these vehicles is the stumbling block. For example, the current Navigator starts at $76,000. Most of its rivals are in the same region. Toyota Land Cruiser costs $83,000 and comes in only one trim level, while others are offering premium versions of luxury models. So, we have the Cadillac Escalade as the biggest rival (Ford vs. GM battle in this class). It is the only one that offers extended ESV version as a rival to the Navigator L. Japanese models we can find here are Infiniti QX80 (new generation is about to be available soon) and Lexus LX. German representative was Mercedes GLS, and the latest addition to the market is BMW X7.
