2021 Mazda CX-5 Redesign, Rumors, Changes, Facelift

Although some other vehicles are the priority, the new 2021 Mazda CX-5 remains the flagship model. The CX-7 is certain, while the other crossover/SUV could be a hybrid. In 2021 we will see another update on the compact vehicle. This is the first time after 2017 season Mazda is revisiting the CX-5 as a part of the mid-cycle refresh.

Sales of the crossover are jumping recently. Last year, CX-5 reached 150,000 sales, which is around 30 percent more than in the previous season. So, there is a potential in the 2021 Mazda CX-5, especially if the company adds a hybrid drivetrain. The compact class is now full of these vehicles. To keep up with the competition, Mazda will create such an engine for its model. The company can also add a diesel unit for the US market. This powerplant is already available in some regions.

What’s more, some sources are claiming that the Japanese carmaker plans to produce more crossovers. Not only that new nameplates are in the mix, but also the higher production of the 2021 Mazda CX-5. That means extra cost and the price of the base version is probably starting northern from the current level.

New Engines for the 2021 Mazda CX-5

A turbodiesel drivetrain is already available in Europe. That is a 2.2-l SkyActiv unit with 150 horsepower. A petrol engine is good for at least 190 hp in the US. However, the diesel mill steps up with the more torque – a total of 280 lb-ft. It won’t make it faster, but the CX-5 can bring better off-road capabilities and better gas mileage. Combined, in the European market, the crossover returns up to 47 mpg.

On the other hand, there are worries about emissions. The market for diesel engines is dying. Requirements are more strict every year. Everything points out that such powerplants will be discontinued in the near future.

Instead, most companies are turning to greener sources of power. Hybrid and PHEV models are growing, and it is just a matter of time when these engines are going to replace even petrol mills. Mazda made the first move by launching the CX-30. However, this is a mild-hybrid model which is not returning as much mileage as we would wish. But, the flagship 2021 Mazda CX-5 will go for 40 mpg, which is the rating of the most efficient models – Toyota Rav4 Hybrid and the upcoming Honda CR-V Hybrid.

Petrol Engines

Standard configurations include a pair of petrol units. The first one is a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter displacement. With 190 hp and 185 lb-ft, the four-cylinder engine is capable of producing enough power for a compact crossover. The reliability of the SkyActiv engine is one of the main reasons for good sales. The automatic transmission has six gears, and the power goes to front wheels. All-wheel drive is one of the highlights and the most praised models in the lineup. Definitely, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 will take advantage of this configuration. The gas mileage is also good for the class, with 28 mpg combined.

Another engine we will see again is a turbocharged four-cylinder mill. A 2.5-liter unit is now delivering 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Still, you will have to pick one of the top tiers of CX-5 to get this engine. Turbo model is available only with the Signature, and GT Reserve trims. Still, if you need a crazy performance and excellent acceleration, you will spend extra on this drivetrain. Fuel economy is also not bad with 25 mpg combined for the FWD versions.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Redesign

Mazda CX-5 looks stunning. It is one of the models that make everyone fall in love at first sight. However, the update will make the crossover even more aggressive. Details are leaking, and the company plans to introduce the all-new front fascia. That is not all, because lighter materials will be in the body. The new 2021 Mazda CX-5 will drop the weight and save some fuel. Spy photographers are yet to deliver the first images of the crossover. Of course, the company keeps it as a secret, although all enthusiasts know the redesign is inevitable.

When Will 2021 Mazda CX-5 Be Available?

The new 2021 Mazda CX-5 is still a concept. The redesign will cause a long development. Although there is no official info, we believe the company has started to rebuild its flagship model. Still, the CX-5 is not going to appear before the second half of 2020. The premiere could happen anywhere in the world since the company is pretty successful in all corners of the planet.

The price in the US will start slightly higher. For now, it sits at $26,000. Changes will cause the increase, but not too big. On the other hand, possible diesel and hybrid units will make it worth at least $30k. Signature is the top trim level, with the hefty price tag that reaches premium waters.
