2021 Subaru Outback and Outback Hybrid: Changes and Redesign

The new generation of the Subaru Outback is using the new architecture. The Subaru Global Platform is supporting different kinds of engines, such as hybrid and electric units. The 2021 Subaru Outback will offer the first one. The EV is the plan which will head into production in a few years. It is still early to talk about the electric model since the hybrid has just arrived.

The 2021 Subaru Outback comes out with a fresh look and some advanced features. The look is eye-catching and you can say this one is not the true crossover SUV. Some say it is a station wagon. Outback Sport, its smaller sibling based on the Impreza, is a true hatchback. The new model looks the same as before. But, changes are making the interior more comfortable for passengers and spacious for the trunk area.

Engines

The 2021 Subaru Outback is coming with the new engine. It is a turbocharged flat-four unit. Of course, Boxer technology provides better stability and maneuvering thanks to the low point of gravity. A 2.4-liter displacement is capable to launch 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. It replaces a flat-six motor and there are several advantages we spotted immediately. First, it is more efficient with 26 mpg combined. Also, the flat-4 doesn’t require premium fuel. Finally, the outputs are similar. A CVT is a power router and you will find this unit if you pick Outback XT version.

The standard offer pairs the same gearbox with a 2.5-liter flat-four. Without turbochargers, the engine is delivering 182 hp and 175 lb-ft of twisting power. The crossover keeps excellent driving skills with a low center of gravity and returns nearly 30 mpg combined. Torque-split AWD is one of the favorite features of all Subaru vehicles. This system distributes power to the wheel that needs it the most, keeping the mind on the grip, performance, and fuel economy.

2021 Subaru Outback Hybrid

The new Outback was under the spotlight for a while, until the company launched a hybrid version of the Crosstrek. Now, fans expect a similar drivetrain for their favorite model. The 2021 Subaru Outback Hybrid is likely to happen as the first update for the new generation of the crossover SUV. The new platform allows engineers to install electric support. Also, the vehicle would be more competitive in the tough market. Well, Outback is not the classic crossover, but its styling is something that draws attention.

The new system will deploy a 2.0-liter engine. In combination with electric sources of power, the gas mileage will reach 35+ mpg. The class leader is the new Honda CR-V with 42 mpg. But, the 2021 Subaru Outback Hybrid will be able to run by using electric power only. The range is not special, but it still offers a 17-mile run. Electric parts of the drivetrain system are a couple of motors on each axle, plus the li-ion battery pack.

2021 Subaru Outback Models and Highlights

Until the hybrid appears, we will find the Outback with a pair of petrol units only. But, the company offers further options. A total of seven packages are ready for further upgrades by buyers.

The base version is available with X-Mode and hill-descent control. The 2021 Subaru Outback will be capable of an off-road drive thanks to 8.7-inch ground clearance. LED lamps, roof rails, and 17-inch wheels are standard. The base model is not offering too much inside, with cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen display. The infotainment system is great, supporting all the most popular connectivity services.

The Premium model brings an 11-inch screen with StarLink safety service. Heating is installed for front seats and the driver is not adjusting its bucket manually anymore. The rear row is getting a couple of USB ports, while the safety measures are higher with fog lights.

Limited and Touring versions are available with the XT package (turbo engine). Leather upholstery, heated rear seats, premium audio, larger wheels, and automatic reverse braking are only some of the upgrades. Touring package adds a power moonroof, ventilation, voice commands for navigation, and Nappa leather.

Onyx Edition XT is available only for the new engine and we still don’t know if this trim is coming back next season.

Why Buy the 2021 Subaru Outback?

First of all, because of its turbo engine. The least expensive XT version costs $36,000 (Onyx). With this one likely missing the next season, Limited trim boosts the price to $39,000. But, the upgrade is worthy, since it offers a unique driving impression you won’t find elsewhere. A lot of safety features are definitely making a difference in Subaru’s favor. For its class, the 2021 Subaru Outback will bring more fun going off-road.

The base price is $28,000. This is slightly higher, since the new Forester is cheaper, and the dimensions of two Subaru vehicles are similar. Also, you can find more spacious crossovers in the same segment.
