2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, Plug-In Hybrid, Specs

The best-selling crossover in the US market is now way ahead of its competition. Now, with the plug-in hybrid engine, we can expect an even bigger gap in sales compared to Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape. The Japanese carmaker aims 500,000 purchase of the 2021 Toyota RAV4 next season.

The new generation of the vehicle debuted a couple of years ago. Immediately, it overtook the number 1 spot in sales from Nissan Rogue. Now, the expectations are higher, especially with the plug-in hybrid version out, called Prime. Still, the base 2021 Toyota RAV4 hybrid is going to be the most efficient crossover in the market with 42 mpg. Only Honda CR-V can compete with it. But, it doesn’t offer the plug-in system.

These are the last words of technology. Still, the conventional engine and the complete offer are also very attractive. Well, these are making the biggest share of the sales for this model.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid

Let’s start with the biggest addition for the next season. The company is going to raise the game to another level with the plug-in hybrid system. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime combines a reliable 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric battery pack. The combination is good for 302 horsepower. Gas mileage will get a huge boost and the range of the electric unit is almost 40 miles.

The Prime model will need less than 6 seconds for a 0-60 mph sprint and the company will offer an extended warranty for this version – 10 years or 150,000 miles. The PHEV crossover is about to debut this summer and then we will find out the precise price. The base model will be the SE and we believe it will cost around $32,000. The carmaker also announced that the XSE package will be available for Rav4 Prime.

Standard Engine

The same four-cylinder powerplant that produces power for the Prime model is under the hood of the base 2021 Toyota RAV4. Without electric batteries, it is developing 205 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Of course, the conventional model is not returning exceptional fuel-economy numbers. With the front-wheel drive, the mileage is 31 mpg. The AWD consumes more gas, especially if you pick and TRD Off-Road package. Still, with 28 mpg, it is one of the most efficient crossovers in the market.

Toyota is pairing a 2.5-liter engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The start/stop system comes standard for the higher-level packages, but it could be shut off if becomes annoying. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 with the conventional setup will be the cheapest offer with the starting price of $26,000.

Hybrid Specifications

Besides the plug-in version, the Rav4 crossover also offers the base hybrid model. It is one of the first units of that kind in the market. But, eve since its introduction, it made huge steps and evolved into an extremely efficient system. Now, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will return a class-leading mileage – 42 miles per gallon. Only the latest Honda CR-V hybrid is capable to return similar numbers.

Again, a 2.5-liter unit is the center of the setup and electric support makes it produce 220 hp. However, the torque drops to 165 lb-ft. Instead of an 8-speed gearbox, engineers installed a CVT case that sends power exclusively to front wheels.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Trim Levels

Prime is the latest version that will enter the market, but it doesn’t bring any special accessories. In the matter of fact, the PHEV crossover will use two trim levels from the standard hybrid offer. The base trim level for this model is LE and Toyota immediately includes the Android Auto into the standard package for its most popular vehicle. Apple CarPlay is also coming along and the center of the infotainment system is a seven-inch touchscreen display.

The next trim is the XLE and the suite includes upgrades such as an 8-way adjustable power seat for a drive and blind-spot monitor. Infotainment gets more USB ports. If you are looking for a luxury offer, then Premium edition brings leather seats and steering wheel. Outside, fans will recognize this model by 19-inch wheels and a power moonroof. Owners of the Rav4 Premium will also get a power liftgate.

There are two versions of the off-road packages for the popular crossover. Adventure is bringing an AWD and 19-inch wheels. Also, the infotainment screen is larger, and the power outlet is available. A popular TRD package is also part of the lineup. Unfortunately, the Rav4 is not offering the Pro version, but only the Off-Road. Buyers are getting special 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and off-road suspension. LED lamps are standard, even for fog lights. The interior will be decorated with TRD badges and unique red accents.

Top of the line trim level is Limited edition. Here, you will find luxurious equipment, similar to the premium Lexus NX sibling. Digital rear-view mirror and JBL audio systems are the most notable upgrades for the crossover SUV whose price starts at $35,000.
