The current generation of Kia’s compact crossover has been around since 2015. So, it’s no wonder that the new model is on the way. According to the latest reports, it will arrive as the 2022 Kia Sportage, probably in the second half of the year. At this point, the new model is still in the testing stage and wears camouflage, but expect it could take it off pretty soon. On the other side, some of the base design characteristics are easy to predict, especially because of the tight connection with the recently introduced new-generation Tucson.
So, what we may expect to see from the 2022 Kia Sportage is a new design, which will make it slightly bigger and better to drive. Naturally, the new styling will be one of its most prominent aspects, but we also count on a luxurious interior and a full load of standard and available equipment. Finally, there is the powertrain lineup, which will include hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions as well.
As we already mentioned, the 2022 Kia Sportage is about to hit the market sometime late in summer.
2022 Kia Sportage Redesign
This redesign is about to bring a lot of novelties and this doesn’t refer just to aesthetics. We are also about to see big novelties in terms of mechanics. The Korean manufacturer has developed a new platform, which will make the new 2022 Kia Sportage lighter and more economical. Also, you may count on the lower center of gravity, which should ensure more engaging handling and better overall driving characteristics.
Another thing we should mention is that the new 2022 Kia Sportage will become slightly bigger. It will gain 0.4 inches in wheelbase, which will definitely bring some benefits in terms of the interior space. Also, there is a chance to see a long-wheelbase version on some markets.
This is definitely one of the most intriguing aspects of the new 2022 Kia Sportage. At this point, the new generation is still in the testing phase and the test mule still wears a camouflage. However, we can see a little bit through it, especially at the front. There, we can see a pretty interesting, futuristic approach to the design of the headlights, which promises a pretty unusual look. The new Hyundai Tucson already arrived and it also comes with unique styling, though with a completely different approach.
On the other side, we can see that the rest of the body will feature a rather conventional overall shape. One of the interesting things that come to our minds is ground clearance. The Tucson is 6.7 inches from the ground, which is significantly lower compared to rivals like Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V etc. We presume that the 2022 Kia Sportage could also come with such a design.
At this point, the interior is a complete mystery. The spy shots show a piece of the cabin, but it’s impossible to get a complete picture. We can see that the infotainment screen will be integrated into the dash, but anything above that is no more than speculation. Still, if we look at the new Tucson, we presume that the new Sportage will be similarly luxurious, which means a high-quality cabin with super-nice materials. If that happens, the new generation will feature one of the nicest cabins in the class.
As we already mentioned, the longer wheelbase will be beneficial in terms of the interior room. We count on a little bit more passenger space, especially in the second row. The cargo area should be bigger as well and we count on similar ratings to the new Tucson.
2022 Kia Sportage Engines
Under the hood, the is about to come with various powertrain options in the offer. Base models will feature good-old 2.5-liter four-cylinder units, which put out around 190 horsepower. A turbo-four should be offered as well, but the most interesting will probably be electrified options.
A classic hybrid option will be offered first. This version will combine a 1.6-liter turbo-four with 60-hp electric motors, which provide a combined output of 225 horsepower.
On the other side, the plug-in hybrid will come a little bit later and it will feature a bigger 90-hp electric motor and a combined output of 260 horsepower. Also, this version will offer around 30 miles of the all-electric range.
2022 Kia Sportage Release Date and Price
We expect to see 2022 Kia Sportage sometime in the second half of the year, though the exact date is yet to be announced. When it comes to the price, base models should go around 25.000 dollars. This is one of the most competitive segments in the automotive industry and some of the leaders are models like Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, Nissan Rogue etc.
