2022 Lexus GX 460: Still Not the Right Moment For Redesign?

The current generation of the famous luxury off-roader has been around for a very long time. Therefore, it may feel a little bit outdated in some aspects, especially when it comes to the chassis and drivetrain. However, it is still a desirable choice among buyers who look for a vehicle that offers a fantastic balance between off-road performance and luxury, along with the brand’s unparalleled reliability. That’s the Japanese engineers don’t rush with the changes and why the 2022 Lexus GX 460 will continue with pretty much the same design characteristics.

In other words, we are about to see a familiar layout, which delivers familiar design characteristics. This means that you may count on excellent off-road capabilities, a long list of safety features, three rows of seats and excellent reliability and durability. However, there are several compromises you have to make, starting from poor fuel economy, unremarkable on-road comfort and outdated interior design.

We expect that the 2022 Lexus GX 460 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.

2022 Lexus GX 460 Redesign

Design-wise, the current generation has been around since 2009. Despite many updates, we are still talking about a 12-year old car, so it’s no wonder that some aspects feel a little bit old. We can’t say that for the styling, considering that the facelift occurred a few years ago and that everything looks pretty modern. On the other side, the chassis feels a little bit old, especially when it comes to handling and on-road comfort.

On the other hand, the 2022 Lexus GX 460 will remain an excellent choice if you need something really capable off the road. High ground clearance and standard four-wheel drive are some of the first things that come to mind, but there is also a long list of upgrades on the offer. You can get goodies like crawl control, transmission cooler, Multi-Terran Monitor, Multi-Terrain Select etc.

Interior

On the inside, you will find a typical Lexus level of quality, but in a little bit older fashion. Not many things have changed since the initial launch in 2009, so the dashboard design and general interior aesthetics may look old to some. If such design solutions don’t bother you too much, then you will find this cabin pretty appealing. Simply, the overall build quality is excellent and we have no doubt this interior will last for a year.

Besides high overall quality, this cabin also comes with a lot of functionality. Base models come with two spacious rows of seats, which accommodate adults passengers pretty easily. On the other hand, the optional third row isn’t particularly generous with space but could be useful in many situations. The cargo volume won’t impress you but seems decent enough for everyday use. You may count on about 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row up, 46.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 64.7 cubic feet in total.

Features

We don’t believe that many things could change for the next year. Most of the things should remain the same, which isn’t bad at all, considering that the current model comes equipped pretty well. Base models come with goodies like dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch touch screen, a nine-speaker stereo, Amazon Alexa capability, voice command, Bluetooth, four USB ports, and HD Radio. Additionally, you can things like navigation, the Lexus Enform App Suite, 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system, tri-zone automatic climate control etc.

When it comes to safety, the current list of standard equipment is pretty long and includes a rearview camera, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and blind-spot monitoring.

2022 Lexus GX 460 Engine

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 will certainly continue in the same fashion when it comes to powertrain. This means that you may count on a good-old 4.6-liter V8, which puts out around 300 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. It definitely isn’t the most powerful engine around, but we like how it sounds and its smoothness. It comes in pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which also does a pretty fine job.

This engine isn’t particularly efficient either. Moreover, we are talking about one of the thirstiest models in the class, which returns around 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

It has no direct competition, as it’s the only premium mid-size BoF SUV. So, the closes alternatives are actually mainstream models like Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited etc.
