2022 Mazda CX-5 Preview: No Bigger Changes To Expect

Considering that the latest reports suggest that the next generation of Mazda’s compact crossover will hit the market most likely during the next year, it’s easy to conclude that the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will remain pretty much the same. It should represent the last model year of the current generation, which has been around for nearly five years. Therefore, we have no doubt that changes will be minimal.

All this means that buyers may count on the same overall layout. The next year won’t bring anything but a couple of tweaks. This means that you may count on a super-attractive crossover, which looks fantastic and rides as good. Also, we adore its optional turbo-four, while the interior is pretty much on par with many models that come with a premium price. Practically, the only complaint about the current generation goes for the cargo volume, which is small for the class.

Considering that the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will bring no significant changes, we are pretty sure it will hit the market sometime late in the year, probably in the last quarter.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Redesign

Since we are talking about probably the last production year of the generation, the overall layout will certainly remain the same. You may count on the same overall design, based on the company’s well-known SkyActive technology, which brings benefits in many aspects. The thing we like most about this crossover is that it is fun to drive, which is something you won’t get from other vehicles of this type.

Of course, we also like the looks of CX-5, which is still the most attractive model in the class, despite that many competitors are younger. The next year shouldn’t bring any particular change, though we won’t exclude the possibility to see a new color option or even some new appearance package.

Interior

There are so many things we like about this crossover, so it’s no wonder the cabin design is among them. Compared to similarly-priced rivals, this crossover comes with much better quality, whether it’s about materials or build quality, as well as with a much more attractive dashboard layout. In this aspect, things are pretty much at the same level as in premium counterparts.

When it comes to seating, the front seats are really amazing. They are supportive and comfortable, while the driving position is excellent. The rear seats aren’t as generous with space but still can accommodate a couple of adults. Still, rivals like Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 offer much more space in the second row.

What we think’s the biggest drawback of the current model is the cargo area. Of course, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will continue in the same way, offering less space than the huge majority of rivals. You may count 31 cubic feet behind the second row and 60 cubic feet of the total cargo volume.

Features

With this aspect, there’s always a chance to see some new things but as we are talking about the last production year, we are pretty sure that most of the things in the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will remain the same. After all, the current model is already equipped pretty well. All models come standard with tech and convenience features like a 10.25-inch touch-screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Mazda Connected Services, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker stereo, and HD Radio.

At higher trim levels, you can get navigation, two rear USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a moonroof, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, and ambient interior lighting. We presume some of these things could become standard in the next year.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Engine

Things under the hood will definitely remain the same. The diesel option has been discontinued recently, so the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will carry on with two familiar gasoline engines in the offer. Base models use a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It puts out around 187 horsepower and offers more than decent driving dynamics.

Still, we would always recommend the optional, turbocharged version of this engine, which offers a max output of either 227 or 250 horsepower, depending on the type of fuel. Driving dynamics are great with this engine, as well as the overall driving experience.

Both engines are also efficient. The base unit returns around 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, while the optional turbo-four provides 23 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Considering that there are no bigger changes to come for the next year, we presume that the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of 2021. Base models should go around 26.000 dollars.
