The new generation of Toyota’s capable SUV is on the way. Those are the latest reports that are coming from our unofficial but reliable sources. It looks like the current generation, which has been around for more than a decade, will finally be replaced with the all-new 2022 Toyota 4Runner, which is about to bring all kinds of novelties and significant improvements. We are still waiting to hear something from the officials, but our reliable sources suggest this is a certain thing.
These days, when crossovers dominate the market, the 4Runner is one of the rare body-on-frame SUVs. Interestingly, that is the main reason for its growing popularity. This SUV became very popular in the last couple of years, so there is no doubt that the 2022 Toyota 4Runner will carry on with the traditional SUV layout. Of course, it will come in a completely new design, with loads of new technologies and, most likely, a completely new powertrain. We expect to see it sometime in the next year.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Redesign
If we consider that the current generation was introduced way back in 2009, there is no doubt that the upcoming redesign will bring all kinds of novelties. Of course, the new 2022 Toyota 4Runner will ride on a completely new platform. The Japanese manufacturer has developed a new body-on-frame platform, which will be called TNGA-F. We expect it will debut in the new Tundra, which is also about to arrive in the next year. The new platform will bring notable improvements in various areas, starting with notable weight savings. At the same time, the new chassis will be stiffer, according to our reliable sources.
Although the Japanese manufacturer will once again put the focus on off-road performances, we believe that a lot of things will be done in order to improve on-road ride quality. The current model doesn’t shine in this aspect and isn’t much practical as a daily commuter. We expect this will change with the new model.
Naturally, this redesign will bring a completely new exterior design, particularly in terms of styling. We expect to see a familiar SUV layout, so the overall shape shouldn’t change too much. The same thing goes to the size. Of course, we count on some increase, but we are pretty sure that Japanese engineers won’t make the new 2022 Toyota 4Runner much bigger. This particularly refers to the wheelbase and overall length, as these are the things that compromise off-road performances. Although a three-row SUV, this model will remain primarily an off-roader, rather than a family hauler.
On the other side, we have no doubt that the model’s front end will follow the brand’s latest design language. Therefore, count on a lot of details borrowed from crossovers like RAV4 and Highlander, as well as from the upcoming Tundra.
We’ve just mentioned that the new 2022 Toyota 4Runner won’t be much bigger than the current model. That clearly indicates that there won’t be much more space on the inside. Still, some improvements in terms of passenger room are certainly about to come. The same thing goes for the cargo area, which should offer a couple of additional cubic feet. Standard models are about to come with five seats, while the third row should be optional.
Of course, the new model will also bring a completely new dashboard design. We count on a much more attractive layout, which better aesthetics, finer materials etc. Naturally, the new model will also come with loads of new tech goodies, which will, besides functionality, also make this dash look more opulent.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Engines
Big things are about to come under the hood as well. The current model comes with a good-old 4.0-liter V6, which may be capable, but also lacks modern refinement. Therefore, we will probably see something smaller and more efficient. Some sources also suggest a turbocharged V6 unit, though we are pretty sure that the 2022 Toyota 4Runner will come with some kind of electrified powertrain.
We also count on a new transmission, as the current 5-speed unit definitely feels outdated. The new model may come with the same new 10-speed automatic gearbox, which is about to come with the next-generation Tundra. More details will come in the next couple of months.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Release Date and Price
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner will probably come sometime in the next year, but it is still early to talk about some more precise date. The same thing goes for the price, though we are pretty sure that the new model won’t come with a drastic price increase compared to the current model, which starts around 36.000 dollars.
