2022 Volvo XC40 Preview: Recharge, Redesign, Hybrid, Colors, Coupe, Price

The Swedish entry-level crossover has so many great things to offer and if we consider that it’s been around for just a couple of years, there is no doubt that the 2022 Volvo XC40 will feature mostly the same characteristics as the current model. After the recent introduction of the all-electric version, it’s pretty much for sure that bigger changes won’t happen before the complete overhaul. Still, we won’t exclude the possibility to see minor updates, such as new color options, new features and similar things.

You may count on a familiar overall design. This crossover offers attractive styling, a smooth ride and powerful engine options. Furthermore, you may count on one of the best cabins in the class, which is spacious and features impressive build quality. Finally, there is a long list of standard equipment, another reason why this crossover is among the class leaders. On the other side, the subpar predicted reliability rating is one of the rare drawbacks.

2022 Volvo XC40 Redesign

In terms of base design characteristics, the 2022 Volvo XC40 definitely won’t change. This model was launched a few years ago and it is still very fresh for any bigger modifications. Visually, it is pretty much aligned with the rest of the lineup, featuring Volvo’s latest design language. For the next year, we definitely don’t expect to see any changes in this aspect. However, minor updates, such as new color options, are always possible.

In terms of mechanics, this crossover rides on the company’s familiar CMA platform, which is reserved for subcompact and compact cars. However, this SUV isn’t that small at all. Moreover, it features more than 106 inches in wheelbase, which puts it among the biggest models in the class where some of the key rivals are subcompact crossovers like Audi Q3, BMW X1 etc. We particularly like the ride quality, which is so smooth that makes you feel like you’re driving a much bigger vehicle.

Interior

Once again, we don’t expect to see bigger changes. That’s not a bad thing at all, considering that we are talking about one of the nicest cabins in the class. It’s not hard to notice that materials and build quality are at a pretty impressive level. We particularly like the final touches, which are amazing. Also, the overall dashboard design is clean and attractive.

Besides excellent quality, this cabin also offers plenty of space and a high level of practicality. Both rows are very generous with space and accommodate adults in such a nice fashion. Also, the driving position and ergonomics, in general, are excellent. The visibility is great in all directions.

When it comes to the cargo area, you may count on about 20.7 cubic feet of room, and that expands to 47.2 cubic feet of the total cargo space. That’s below average for the segment.

Features

We might see a couple of novelties for the next year but most of the things will certainly remain the same. The current model comes standard with goodies like a digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio, an eight-speaker premium stereo, automatic climate control. Additionally, you can get things like a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, wireless device charging, navigation, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo.

The same thing is with safety features. The current model already stands pretty well in this aspect, as it comes standard with things like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, oncoming collision mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive LED headlights, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. You can also get upgrades like a surround-view parking camera system, front parking sensors, and automatic parking assist.

2022 Volvo XC40 Engines

This aspect definitely won’t bring changes. Base models will continue with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out 187 horsepower. That seems quite enough for daily commuting and should satisfy most drivers. If you prefer something peppier, you can get a more powerful version of the engine, with a max output of 250 horsepower. Both engines come in pair with 8-speed automatic transmission.

Of course, there is also the recently-introduced all-electric version, which will come as the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge. This one uses two electric motors, with a max output of 402 horsepower. That’s enough to move this crossover from zero to sixty in just 4.7 seconds. Also, you may count on a 75-kWh battery capacity, which is enough for more than 200 miles on a single charge.

2022 Volvo XC40 Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2022 Volvo XC40 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year. Base models should go around 34.000 dollars. On the other side, the all-electric version starts at around 55.000 dollars.
