2023 Kia Sportage Redesign: Hybrid, Release Date, Canada, SX Prestige

The all-new Sportage is finally here. After the last year’s premiere in markets around the globe, the time for the North American version has finally come. The new generation brings improvements in all aspects and we can already say that it is a much better vehicle than the previous generation. It has arrived in the showrooms and the officials are very optimistic about the new model, expecting a big boost in sales.

Compared to the previous generation, the new 2023 Kia Sportage is better in many ways. Of course, there’s the new styling, in which the interior design brings a way more upscale approach. Moreover, the interior is also more spacious and more functional, while the cargo area is bringing some of the best numbers in the class. Finally, there is a new powertrain lineup, which includes two hybrid versions, along with the familiar inline-four, which may have remained the same but comes with a new transmission.

Design-wise, this redesign seems pretty revolutionary. One look at the styling and you can easily notice that the Korean manufacturer has completely abandoned the previous design language and that it now combines sharper edges with more classic design solutions. We really like how the new model looks and we are pretty sure that this slightly more conservative approach will make it look fresh in the following years as well.

Besides the new styling, the new 2023 Kia Sportage also brings bigger dimensions. The new model is larger in every aspect. It is longer and wider, while the wheelbase has been notably extended as well. As a result, the new model features similar dimensions to Tiguan, which is highly beneficial in terms of interior space and functionality.

Mechanically, the new model shares most of its parts with the new Tucson. The platform is the same, though we’ve noticed a slightly different suspension setup. The Sportage is slightly firmer, offering sportier and more engaging handling. Still, the ride remains smooth and comfortable.

Interior

As we already mentioned, the new generation is notably bigger than the previous model and as a result, there is more space on the inside. The previous generation was already generous with legroom but the new model really impresses. This particularly refers to the second row, which can accommodate three adult passengers with ease. The front seats are new and they feel more massive and more comfortable. Also, the side support is better, so we have no doubt that the new model will be very comfortable on longer journeys.

Besides more space, the new cabin also features a completely new design. The new model looks way more upscale, thanks to the more attractive dashboard design and massive use of high-quality materials. Higher trim levels, which are equipped with bigger screens and more features, even look comparable with small crossovers from the previous segment. Interestingly, Kia designers have kept the traditional gear lever, unlike colleagues from Hyundai who installed a modern shifter.

Speaking of the tech features, base models come standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster and Bluetooth. Interestingly, Bluetooth can now connect two smartphones simultaneously. Among options, you can find things like wireless smartphone charging, a wi-fi hotspot, Harman Kardon sound, as well as a 12.3-inch touchscreen, which is standard in all but base LX trim.

Finally, there is the matter of cargo space. This is another aspect where the new cabin impresses. You may count nearly 40 cubic feet behind the second row, which is an incredible number for a compact SUV.

2023 Kia Sportage Engines

The 2023 Kia Sportage comes with three powertrain options on offer. Base models continue with a good-old 2.5-liter turbo-four, which puts out 187 horsepower. However, a big change came in the form of a new 8-speed automatic transmission, which replaced the old 6-speed unit.

Also, there are two new, hybrid powertrain options. The first one features a classic hybrid setup, based on a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine. The total output goes around 226 horsepower, while the company promises around 33 miles per gallon in a combined ride. If you’re up for something more powerful, there is a plug-in hybrid version. This one is based on the same turbo-four engine but comes with a more capable electric motor, so the total output goes up to 261 horsepower. Also, you may count on around 30 miles of the all-electric range.

The 240-hp turbo-four from the previous generation is not on offer anymore. Some sources suggest it could be replaced with the new 2.5-liter turbo-four that puts out 281 horsepower. At this point, the officials are still quiet.
