2023 Land Rover Discovery Review: Specs, Features, Metropolitan Edition, Sport

While other mid-size luxury SUVs are all about comfort and convenience, the Land Rover Discovery plays a different kind of game. Of course, it is also luxurious but its strongest point is the impressive off-road performance, which has no match in the class. The current generation has been around since 2017 but after the 2021 update, it’s quite obvious that the current generation has a few more years before it gets a full redesign. Meanwhile, the 2023 Land Rover Discovery continues mostly in the same way, though there are a few interesting novelties.

Without any doubt, the biggest novelty for this model year is the introduction of the new Metropolitan Edition, which adds various exclusive exterior and interior details. Other than that, things have remained largely the same. So, you may count on an SUV that offers excellent off-road performance, two capable powertrains, a stylish exterior and a well-built interior. Of course, there are a few drawbacks as well, particularly in terms of third-row room and cargo are behind it.

2023 Land Rover Discovery Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2023 Land Rover Discovery carries mostly without changes, with the exception of the new Metropolitan Edition. This model comes with various exclusive styling details, starting with 22-inch wheels, from the unique grille, special emblems, and silver bumper inserts. Also, we should mention that the mid-range R-Dynamic trim no comes with a black contrast roof as standard.

The rest of the design remains the same, whether it’s about styling or mechanics. Therefore, you may count on the same ride quality, which is decent but not spectacular on the road. Where this SUV shines is the off-road ride. All models come standard with goodies like adjustable suspension that can go up to 11 inches from the ground, four-wheel drive, hill descent control and Wade Sensing. Additionally, you can get goodies like low-speed cruise control, a two-speed transfer case and a rear locking differential, as well as the Terrain Response 2 system.

Interior

On the inside, the main changes are those in terms of the new Metropolitan Edition. That version comes with a new Titanium Mesh trim, as well as with new standard features, such as a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, and heated seats for all three rows.

The rest of the cabin remains the same. So, you may count on the familiar layout, which combines classic design solutions with high-quality materials and lots of tech features. The overall impression is pretty good.

When it comes to passenger space, the first two rows of seats are spacious and comfortable. On the other hand, we can’t say the same for the third row, which is tight and works only for kids. The cargo area offers just 9.1 cubic feet behind the third row. Things are much better behind the second and first rows, where you get 45 and 74 cubic feet, respectively, which is really good for the segment.

Features

One of the main strengths of Discovery is a long list of standard and available equipment. Base models come standard with goodies like an 11.4-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, two USB ports, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker Meridian stereo, a dual-pane panoramic roof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, tri-zone automatic climate control, a universal garage door opener and proximity keyless entry.

The list of available features includes goodies like ambient interior lighting, a center console refrigerator compartment, quad-zone automatic climate control, the Activity Key, Wi-Fi hotspot, 14-speaker premium audio system and more.

When it comes to safety, all models come standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, driver attention monitoring and many more.

2023 Land Rover Discovery Engines

The 2023 Land Rover Discovery continues with two familiar powertrain options. Base models use a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty enough for good driving dynamics. If you’re looking for something peppier, you can opt for a 3.0-liter inline-six, which comes with a mild-hybrid system and puts out 355 horsepower and offers notably better performance.

Both engines come in pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which feels smooth and very refined. When it comes to fuel economy, the base engine returns around 19 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, while the inline-six returns around 24 mpg in a combined ride. Both engines are thirsty and offer subpar economy for the class. When properly equipped, this SUV can tow more than 8.000 pounds.
