2023 Lexus GX Preview: No Changes Expected

Some things are like wine. Even though it’s been around for nearly 13 years, the current generation of this mid-size SUV is still a very desirable vehicle. Moreover, sales numbers were amazing last year, with a 14% improvement compared to 2020. Considering that growth, it’s quite obvious that Toyota engineers won’t rush with the redesign. Most likely, the current generation will remain in production for some more time, which clearly indicates that the 2023 Lexus GX 460 will come without more important updates.

You may count on an SUV that offers pretty impressive off-road performance, in a combination with excellent interior quality, a long list of standard features etc. Still, the old design means that you will have to accept some compromises, starting from poor fuel economy, tight third row, small cargo area etc.

Considering that there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2023 Lexus GX 460 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.

2023 Lexus GX 460 Design

The current generation of this SUV has been around since 2009. While that’s plenty of time, keep in mind that Lexus designers did a couple of updates meanwhile, so it’s no wonder that the current model still feels competitive. Visually, the last time we saw updates was two years ago, with the 2020 model year. All in all, the GX follows the brand’s contemporary design language, with things like the latest version of the famous spindle grille.

On the other hand, the mechanical aspect of the vehicle hasn’t changed much since the initial launch. Therefore, you may notice that the ride is typical for a body-on-frame SUV when you won’t get much from this SUV on the road. There is a lot of body lean in corners, while the ride is pretty firm at the same time.

Interior

The interior design largely depends on your perspective. If you are a tech freak, you will probably find this cabin look old. However, the fact is that the dashboard features a classic design, which ages pretty well. More importantly, the build quality is excellent. The materials are also very nice and, typically for Lexus, there is a lot of attention to detail. Sound insulation is pretty good too.

This is a mid-size SUV and it comes with three rows of seats. However, its relatively short wheelbase is definitely a limiting factor regarding legroom, so it’s no wonder that the third row of seats is pretty tight. On the other hand, the first two rows are spacious and comfortable.

With 11.6 cubic feet of space, the cargo area behind the third row isn’t particularly useful. However, things are much better once you fold them down. Then, you may count on 46.7 cubic feet. The total cargo volume goes up to 65 cubic feet.

Features

We don’t believe that the 2023 Lexus GX could bring any significant changes regarding the standard and optional features. So, base models should come equipped with goodies like dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, moonroof, a 10.3-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, a nine-speaker stereo, voice recognition, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, four USB ports, and navigation. Among optional features, expect to find tri-zone climate control, Mark Levinson premium audio system etc.

When it comes to safety features, all models should come standard with a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, parking sensors etc. Additionally, you can get a surround-view camera and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

2023 Lexus GX 460 Engine

Things under the hood definitely won’t change. The 2023 Lexus GX 460 will continue with the well-known 4.6-liter V8 engine, which features a max output of 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. While that’s not some crazy amount of power, the driving dynamics are pretty decent, while the 6-speed automatic transmission does a pretty good job. It’s worth mentioning that 4WD is standard in all models.

The engine and the whole mechanical aspect of the SUV are durable and exceptionally reliable. However, the price you have to pay for this is poor fuel economy. The best you can get from this SUV is 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

Since there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2023 Lexus GX 460 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year. There aren’t many vehicles of this kind on the market, so it’s hard to find a direct rival. Some of the models that could be considered competitors are Range Rover Sport, as well as the GX’s corporal sibling, Toyota 4Runner.
