The new generation of Mazda’s bestseller is on the way and if we can trust the latest reports, it will hit the market in less than two years, as the 2023 Mazda CX-5. From what we can hear, the Japanese manufacturer is working on a lot of interesting novelties. These will make this crossover even more upscale, pretty much on par with premium players of the segment.
One of the first things that come to mind is the new platform, which will feature an FR layout. This perfectly shows the company’s intention to become a genuine premium player. Furthermore, there is a completely new engine lineup on the way, while we also count on a brand-new transmission. Finally, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 will bring a completely new exterior and interior design.
2023 Mazda CX-5 Redesign
As we’ve just mentioned, one of the biggest changes compared to the current model will be the layout. The current model features a typical FF layout, with a transversally mounted engine, just like any mainstream compact crossover. The new platform will be completely different, with the rear-wheel-drive and longitudinally-mounted engine, which will make the new 2023 Mazda CX-5 a genuine premium player, with the design that can compete with German premium players, such as BMW and Mercedes.
Of course, we expect other improvements from the new model, including an even more engaging suspension and chassis setup, which will provide the ultimate driving experience. Weight reduction also comes to mind, as well as a completely new, more natural steering setup.
Styling and Interior
Of course, styling is another thing that comes to mind. Mazda has always been famous for gorgeous designs, so the 2023 Mazda CX-5 shouldn’t be any different. We expect a completely new design language, which would be shared with the next-generation Mazda 6. This will probably include some styling elements from the CX-30, though we expect to see a full load of exclusive details, which will make this crossover the best-looking model in the class again.
The same thing goes for interior design. Mazda is already a premium player when it comes to interior designs, so we can only see further improvements in the future. The simplistic dashboard design is what we expect to see, along with even finer materials and even better build quality. Naturally, loads of new tech features are expected as well, starting from a new infotainment system, new driver-assistance features etc.
2023 Mazda CX-5 Engines
This is probably the most interesting thing about the 2023 Mazda CX-5. We expect to see a completely new engine lineup, which will include a couple of brand-new setups. Base models will probably continue with the new SkyActiveX four-cylinder unit with around 190 horsepower, the same engine that can be found in the CX-30. On the other hand, higher grades will come equipped with a brand-new, inline-six gasoline engine, which will also feature SkyActiveX technology. The base version of this engine will be naturally-aspirated and we expect that the max output will go around 280 horsepower.
A turbocharged variant will feature a max output of 325 horsepower and 400+ pound-feet of torque, according to the latest reports. Finally, a twin-turbo version of this engine has been confirmed too, though we still don’t know the specs. Of course, we also count on a completely new transmission, probably an 8-speed unit from Aisin.
A plug-in hybrid version will come too. Most likely, it will be based on a 2.0-liter engine, with a combined output of 280 horsepower, according to rumors. The same rumors suggest more than 30 miles of the all-electric range.
2023 Mazda CX-5 Release Date and Price
At this point, it’s still early to talk about the exact date, but we believe that the 2023 Mazda CX-5 will arrive in less than two years. The price will certainly be higher compared to the current generation, though it’s still early for estimations.
