2023 Mazda CX-50 Review: Hybrid and Dimensions

The Japanese manufacturer has just released a completely new model called the 2023 Mazda CX-50. Interestingly, it doesn’t feature the so-much-awaited RWD layout with an inline-six engine, but rather a familiar design approach, which characterized Mazda models in the past several years. Most of the parts are shared with the CX-5, which will remain in production for a little bit more time. The CX-50 is bigger and feels more rugged, so that’s probably the reason why the company thinks there’s enough room for both models in the lineup.

The new model has a lot of great things to offer. First of all, you may count on excellent interior quality, combined with lots of standard and available features. Furthermore, the SUV is a real joy to drive, thanks to the engaging handling and capable powertrain options. On the other hand, the main complaint goes to the small cargo area, which is something that bothers pretty much every Mazda model.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is already on sale.

2023 Mazda CX-50 Design

As we already mentioned, the new 2023 Mazda CX-50 is rather based on Mazda’s older platform, the same one that underpins the CX-5. Thanks to such a design approach, the new model keeps a quite competitive price, despite the pretty luxurious design approach.

Compared to the CX-5, the CX-50 features a longer wheelbase and bigger dimensions. Also, it features a more rugged styling, characterized by a little bit bolder appearance, even though Mazda’s magic is still there.

Considering the platform, you may know what to expect in terms of ride quality. Just like other Mazda models, this one also offers a high level of athleticism. This SUV is fun to drive, while it’s also worth mentioning that all models come standard with all-wheel drive, so you may count on an additional grip in corners.

Interior

Mazda has been offering impressive interior designs for years and the new 2023 Mazda CX-50 is no exception. Once again, you get the nicest cabin in the segment, which is full of super-fine materials and comes with a lot of attention to detail. The build quality is excellent, while the new dash looks a little bit bolder compared to some other Mazda models.

2023 Mazda CX-50 Interior

As we already mentioned, the new model features a longer wheelbase than the CX-5. Therefore, it’s no wonder it offers more legroom. Both models are very generous in this aspect and accommodate adults with ease. However, taller passengers may find the lack of headroom in the second row. Surprisingly, the smaller CX-5 offers more headroom in the second row than the new CX-50.

Typically for Mazda, the cargo area is small. You may count on no more than 31.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 56.3 cubic feet, which is less than you get from classmates like Hyundai Tucson or Honda CR-V.

Features

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 comes with a long list of standard and available equipment. Base models come with goodies like remote keyless entry, push-button start, an 8.8-inch display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, an eight-speaker stereo and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Among upgrades, you can find lots of interesting things, starting from a 10.25-inch display, navigation, wireless device charging, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 12-speaker stereo, proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control and a panoramic moonroof.

When it comes to safety features, all models come standard with goodies like a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control etc. You can also opt for parking sensors, surround-view camera, head-up display, road sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, adaptive headlights etc.

2023 Mazda CX-50 Engine

Under the hood, this SUV brings no surprises. The 2023 Mazda CX-50 comes with two familiar powertrain options. Base models use a 2.5-liter inline-four, which puts our around 187 horsepower, which is enough for decent performance. Still, we would rather opt for a turbocharged version of this engine, which features a max output of 256 horsepower and offers notably better performance.

Both engines come coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to all wheels. When it comes to fuel economy, the base engine returns around 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Models with the turbo-four are slightly thirstier and return around 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
