2023 Mazda CX-9 Preview: Still Waiting For Redesign

The segment mid-size crossover is full of amazing models but the CX-9 is still one of the best models in the class, despite the fact that it is one of the oldest players in this class. Thins will change in the next few years and the Japanese manufacturer will introduce a completely new model, with significant changes. It will bring a brand-new platform, inline-six engines, rear-wheel drive and many more. However, this won’t happen before the 2024 model year, which clearly indicates that the 2023 Mazda CX-9 is about to come without more important updates.

We are about to see a familiar design, as well as familiar features. So, you may count on a crossover that offers plenty of style and refinement, along with excellent interior quality and plenty of standards and available equipment. Furthermore, we like the model’s athletic handling, as well as the peppy turbo-four engine, which is also quite efficient.

Since we probably won’t be seeing bigger changes, we believe that the 2023 Mazda CX-9 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Design

Since the 2023 Mazda CX-9 is about to be a typical carryover model, you know what to expect from it. The current generation has been around since 2016 but still has a lot of great things to offer. First of all, it looks great, thanks to the company’s famous KODO design language. Not many things have changed during these five years of production, but this model still looks fresh and stylish.

Besides attractive aesthetics, this model also offers a pretty nice chassis and suspension setup, which makes the handling pretty engaging. Even though we are talking about a mid-size crossover, the CX-9 is a pretty fun vehicle to drive.

Interior

Mazda is well-known for making amazing interiors and the CX-9 is no exception. Once again, you can easily notice Mazda’s famous design approach, which is all about simplicity and elegance. The dashboard features a clean design, which is complemented by a simple instrument cluster and just a couple of tech goodies. The materials are super-fine, while the build quality is at the luxury-car level. All in all, things look way better than in most rival cabins.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Interior

The front seats are massive and supportive. Also, the side support is pretty good, while the driving position is excellent, even though the rearward visibility isn’t great, mostly because of thick rear pillars. The second row is also pretty spacious and accommodates adults pretty easily. On the other hand, the third row isn’t that great and fits kids only.

The cargo area is probably the weakest point of this crossover. You may count on about 4.4 cubic feet of space with all the seats up, 38.2 cubic feet behind the second row, and a total of 71.2 cubic feet. That’s below average for the class and way less than you get from typical mid-size crossovers such as Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer.

Features

Once again, no bigger changes are expected. In other words, all models should come standard with goodies like tri-zone climate control, a 10.3-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker stereo, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Among upgrades, you can find a moonroof, a navigation system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless device charging, four more USB ports, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose stereo.

The same thing goes with safety features. All models should come standard with forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. There are a few more available upgrades, such as front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, a driver attention monitor, a surround-view parking camera system, and reverse automatic emergency braking.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Engine

No changes under the hood are about to come. So, you may count on a familiar 2.5-liter turbo-four engine, which puts out 227 horsepower with regular fuel and a full 250 horsepower with premium gasoline. Besides decent horsepower, this engine also features pretty impressive max torque, which goes up to 320 pound-feet of torque. For that reason, driving dynamics are pretty impressive, even better when compared with many V6 rivals. The engine comes in pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which also does a pretty good job.

Besides good driving dynamics, this engine also offers pretty good fuel economy. You may count on about 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg in the city, which is pretty impressive for a vehicle of this size.
