After the recent launch of the all-new, fourth generation of the famous mid-size luxury crossover, we can already find reports about the 2020 BMW X5. The popular SUV has been around for almost two decades. For that time, it gained a reputation of one of the world’s leading models in the segment. Moreover, it is a model that definitely the class of mid-size luxury SUVs. The new generation came a little bit earlier than usual, mainly because of a new platform, which already underprints the rest of the company’s lineup. There is a full load of new design solutions but it looks like that is just an overture for what we are going to see in the next year, 2020 BMW X5. Latest reports suggest that the new hi-performance, M-badged version is about to come, as well as a new hybrid version. All in all, a lot of interesting novelties.

In terms of base design characteristics, the 2020 BMW X5 won’t change. The recent redesign has brought lots of novelties. First of all, there is a new CLAR platform, which already underpins related models like 7 Series and the upcoming X7 full-size crossover. Compared to the previous generation, the new model is lighter, more agile and also more efficient. It gets bigger as well. You can count on 1.6-inches longer wheelbase.

In terms of overall dimensions, the most notable are additional 2.6 inches in width, while length and height have got one more inch. In terms of mechanics, some of the most notable novelty is a new all-wheel-drive system, which significantly improves efficiency, thanks to its ability to decouple front wheels when there is no need for their usage. Also, there is a new five-link rear suspension, which brings comfort to a completely new level. Speaking of the suspension, the new model features an adjustable air suspension, which allows you to lower or raise the vehicle for a couple of inches.

While the mechanical aspect brings a whole bunch of new technologies and design solutions, visual changes aren’t that spectacular. The new generation continues the evolution of the previous model and keeps a similar shape and overall layout. Of course, most notable changes came at the front end, which sticks to the company’s famous kindle grille design philosophy. However, it comes with a more angular approach, something that we’ve seen on the new X7 concept.

On the inside, you can also notice evolutionary changes. The cabin keeps a familiar layout, but comes with more style, thanks to new lines and better-quality materials. The dashboard is highlighted by two large 12.3-inch screens, one of the instrument cluster and the other to run the infotainment system.

Among numerous all-new tech features, there are also several new safety systems and driver aids. One of them is a new adaptive cruise control, which features a stop&go system that works even in jammed traffic. Also, there is an advanced system that is able to make automatic lane changes when you hold the turn signal. Finally, count on a new automatic parallel and perpendicular system.

At the moment, there are two gasoline engines in the offer in North America. Those are a 3.0-liter inline-six with around 335 horsepower and a large 4.4-liter V8, which is good for about 456 horses. Outside North America, this crossover also comes in diesel variants. There is a familiar 3.0-liter inline-six unit, which comes in two variants. The first one is good for about 265 horsepower. A more powerful version comes with four turbochargers and a max output that goes all away up to 400 horsepower. The 2020 BMW X5 will continue with these units but also come with two all-new models. Those are a hi-performance 2020 BMW X5 M, and a new plug-in hybrid model.

One of the most interesting novelties for the next year will be a new hi-performance 2020 BMW X5 model. Of course, the core of the new model will be under the hood. This model is expected to come with a new version of the familiar V8 engine, with a max output of amazing 600 horsepower. Besides new engine, expect all those upgrades typical for M-badged models. This includes mechanical upgrades like new suspension setup, as well as a lot of visual upgrades, both outside and on the inside.

The next year will also bring a new plug-in hybrid version. For this occasion, the Bavarian manufacturer has prepared a completely new powertrain, which is built over a familiar 3.0-liter inline-six engine that delivers around 280 horsepower. In addition, there is a new electric setup with around 110 horsepower. Total output goes around 390 horses and 445 pound-feet of torque. Besides more power, the new version will also feature longer EV range than before. The company claims around 50 miles.

2020 BMW X5 Release Date and Price

Considering new that there are two new versions to come, the 2020 BMW X5 could arrive a little bit earlier than usual. It should keep the same base price, which goes around 60.000 dollars. On the other side, pricing for new hybrid and M models is yet to be announced.
