Three-row SUV is very popular segment nowadays. It includes pretty much everything that comes with three rows of seating, both mid-size and full-size SUVs and crossovers. Pretty much every renowned car maker has something to offer in this segment. Every year, we are seeing new things, improvements in terms of design, technologies, performances etc. Next year will be pretty interesting since several companies are going to offer completely new versions of their famous models. For example, a famous mid-size luxury crossover BMW X5 is coming completely new, as well as larger Mercedes GLS. Speaking of mainstream models, Hyundai introduced a new generation of Santa Fe just recently. VW Touareg is also coming completely redesigned. Besides several redesigns, expect to see numerous updates. One of the most anticipated is an updated version of the excellent Honda Pilot, which will besides new look also get a new hybrid powertrain.

2019 Toyota Highlander

Considering that we saw an update a few years ago, it is pretty much for sure that the 2019 Toyota Highlander will be a carryover model. It will continue in the pretty much same way, features the same design, interior, engines etc. The new model will come this fall and biggest changes should be in terms of standard equipment, where we could see some smaller additions. Still, don’t expect anything significant. Few safety features and things like that is pretty much everything we’re going to see. Engines will remain the same. Base models will use a reliable 2.7-liter inline-four unit, which is good for about 185 horses, while the higher trims will come with a 295-hp V6 unit. Finally, there is a hybrid version, with two electric motors and same V6, which has a max output of 306 horsepower.

2019 Mazda CX-9

This model has always been one of our favorites. A well-designed 2019 Mazda CX-9 will probably continue in the same way when it comes to base characteristics. The current model is present for about two years and completely follows brand’s current design language. On the other side, we could see some updates inside. Some reports suggest interior tweaks which will include new materials, as well as new schemes. Additionally, we should see more features in base versions. These new standard features should mostly be in terms of safety, but don’t exclude new entertainment features.  When it comes to powertrain, 2019 Mazda CX-9 will continue with the same, pretty capable, 2.5-liter unit, which delivers around 250 horses. Fuel economy is on a pretty high level, around 25 miles per gallon in a combined drive.

The big news is coming from Honda. The 2019 Honda Pilot is about to get a facelift. First of all, we will see the application of the Honda’s new design language, characterized by more aggressive stance. There are new headlights, grille, bumper, and many other things to come. Expect few tweaks inside as well. Besides these cosmetic updates, the 2019 Honda Pilot will also get a new, hybrid powertrain. It will use the same system as famous Accord, which comes with two electric motors and provides amazing fuel economy. On the other side, base 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine will carry on without changes.

One of the biggest novelties in three-row SUV segment for this year is a completely new 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The fourth generation of this popular crossover had its premiere recently at the Geneva Motor Show. Compared to the previous generation, it comes with numerous improvements. First of all, there is a completely new, far more attractive styling. The new model is also bigger than its predecessor, which indicated more space inside. Engine choice will be very wide. We will see familiar gasoline units with improved efficiency, as well as a diesel engine which will be offered in the U.S. as well. Audi redesigned its mid-size crossover two years ago, so it is pretty much clear that 2019 Audi Q7 won’t feature bigger changes. It will continue with the same design, featuring same styling as well as interior design. On the other side, some tweaks in terms of standard features are certain. Most likely, the company will introduce few new standard features. When it comes to engines, base models will continue with the same 2.0-liter unit with around 250 horses. On the other side, optional V6 is good for about 330 horsepower. In Europe, diesel versions are available as well. A familiar 3.0-liter TDI is the first choice of European drivers. The 2019 Kia Sorento should get few visual updates which will keep it fresh and competitive until next generation arrives. A popular Korean SUV is about to receive a new face, which will include new front fascia, tweaked grille, and bumper, and maybe even slightly reshaped headlights. Rest of the car could also receive few novelties. On the other side, interior design is likely to remain unchanged. The cabin design should remain the same, but we could see updates in terms of standard equipment. Engine lineup is about to remain the same. Base models will feature a familiar 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 178 horsepower, while an optional 2.0-liter turbo engine, which comes with a new 8-speed automatic gearbox, will be good for about 240 horses. Finlay, there is a V6 option, with a max output of 290 horsepower.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS

The famous German carmaker is also preparing big novelties for the next year. The development of the new generation is in the advanced stage and we are expecting tones of novelties. A platform that will be used for this occasion is a stretched version of the MHA architecture, used for GLC model. Finally, there is a completely new styling to come. Besides things like new platform or styling, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS will come with plenty of novelties under the hood. The focus will be on the hybrid powertrain. So, both six- and eight-cylinder gasoline units will actually come with mild-hybrid technology. Additionally, expect one plug-in hybrid powertrain in the offer as well. Eventually, expect to see a hi-performance AMG version with over 600 horses. All units should be paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

The famous crossover from Swedish manufacturer is currently in the second generation. This version is present for about four years and latest reports suggest 2019 Volvo XC90 could get some updates. Most likely, it would be a mid-cycle refresh, which would include numerous changes starting from new visual appearance. We are expecting to see many novelties at the front end, but in other parts of the car too. When it comes to the interior, some tweaks on the dash are possible, but the base design will remain the same. The engine lineup is about to continue in the same way. Base models will feature a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 240 horses. An optional supercharged version of this engine delivers around 320 horsepower. Finally, there is a hybrid version that uses the same gasoline engine, along with electric motors and has a total output of 405 horsepower.

This crossover came less than two years ago and instantly became popular in Europe and some other parts of the world. Considering its recent arrival, we don’t expect bigger changes for the next year. It will continue in the same way, featuring familiar styling and interior design. Still, some novelties in terms of new standard features are possible. When it comes to powertrain, there are some familiar VW’s units in the offer. Base models will use a familiar 1.4-liter TSI engine with a max power of 148 horsepower. There is also a 2.0-liter unit which is good for about 177 horses. Finally, there a famous 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine which comes in two versions, with either 148 or 188 horses.

2019 Land Rover Discovery

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery will represent the second year model of the current generation. Considering recent redesign, bigger changes are not expected. Now a full-size crossover, this model would be a perfect choice for all those who need spacious cabin and good performances, along with the stylish appearance. The new generation uses the same design language as Discovery Sport, just in a bigger package. When it comes to engines, the focus is on V6 units. A supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is standard engine in this crossover and it delivers around 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. On the other side, there is an optional 3.0-liter V6 diesel unit, which delivers around 255 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Both engines use the same 8-speed automatic transmission.

2019 Range Rover Sport

After five years of production, the current generation of this popular SUV will come with a big novelty. The company will introduce a completely new, plug-in hybrid version. In terms of base design characteristics, it won’t be much different compared to gasoline models. Still, the new powertrain will be pretty capable. It will include a familiar 2.0-liter gasoline engine in a combination with a high-output 114-hp electric motor. So, the total output should be around 400 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, which should be enough to provide 0-60 time in about six seconds, while a top speed will go over 135 miles per hour.  The exact launch date is still to be announced, but it will certainly be sometime in the summer.
