Although three-row SUVs are getting more popular every year, smaller and more practical two-row models are still a priority for the most of carmakers. This segment is probably the most competitive when it comes to crossovers. Models with excellent quality are numerous. Some of them are present for decades, while the others are pretty fresh on the market. Still, both have one thing in common. They are constantly getting new updates, in order to gain or retain some good position in the market. For the next year, there are many novelties to come. Some of those models like Toyota RAV4 or Subaru Forester will come completely new. On the other side, models like Ford Edger and Hyundai Tuscon will get a mid-cycle update. Rest of the crossovers will probably come with smaller, but still nice updates. Here is our list of most interesting two-row crossovers for the next year.
2019 Mitsubishi Outlander
The redesign of this SUV has been delayed. Those are the latest news about this affordable crossover. Originally released in 2001, it was always considered as a crossover that offers a plenty of value for the price. The current generation is present since 2012, but there was an update in 2015. This refresh included not only visual changes but many other improvements as well. Those are noise reduction, new CVT transmission, new suspension and much more. Considering all this, it seems that the redesign isn’t that urgent as some believe. Mitsubishi is now part of Renault-Nissan Alliance, so we could expect the new generation to come with various changes. Still, it won’t happen so far. The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander definitely remains unchanged.
2019 Jeep Wrangler
After many years of waiting, the iconic SUV has finally been redesigned. The previous generation was in production for almost 12 years, so this was a big event for the famous American SUV. With plenty of changes, the new generation comes as a 2018-year model. This redesign included various changes in all aspects. Although the base styling remains pretty much the same, there is a completely new architecture, designed especially for this SUV. The new model is lighter, more capable and more efficient. Also, various new technologies are available. Still, there is plenty of room for further novelties, so 2019 Jeep Wrangler will also come with some new things. You are probably familiar with the new pickup version that is about to come, but we will also see new powertrain options in the offer. Latest reports suggest that the new hybrid powertrain is about to come next year.
2019 Nissan Rogue
Based on the CMF platform, the second generation of this crossover rides since 2013. Still, we have already seen a so-called mid-cycle update two years ago. This refresh included various styling modifications, as well changes on the inside. Since then, the company makes some smaller updates every year. The current 2018-year model comes with safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which are part of the standard equipment now. So, expect a similar kind of update for the 2019 Nissan Rogue as well. It should include few new standard features for each trim level, while other changes don’t seem so likely. Base design characteristics should remain the same until the redesign, which we expect to see in about two years.
2019 Subaru Outback
The excellent 2019 Subaru Outback will continue to be a class for itself. This unique car takes the best from crossover and station wagon. Such combination made this car what it is today – probably the best choice for families. This model simply doesn’t have weak point. It is extremely reliable, with plenty of interior space, while off-road capabilities are on a decent level as well. The current generation is present for about four years and we have already seen the first update. The current 2018-year model comes with a variety of changes. There are some new visual details which made this crossover more attractive, but there is also a bunch of new features inside. In the mechanical aspect, the company did some nice things in order to reduce cabin noise. Considering all this, we don’t expect bigger changes for the 2019 Outback, although few new features are always welcome.
2019 VW Tiguan
When it was originally released, many experts predicted that this crossover could become some kind of “Golf among crossovers”. Ten years later, it doesn’t come even close to the iconic hatchback. Still, it is a very good crossover, with plenty of benefits. Combining VW’s famous quality with attractive design and good performances, it managed to attract a big number of drivers, so sales numbers are on a pretty amazing level. The second-generation model came two years ago. Compared to the original, it looks far more attractive, while driving experience is also on a higher level. It is important no mention that a stretched version with three rows of seats are available as well. Considering its relatively recent arrival and expected production cycle, we don’t expect changes for the next year. Still, some new features on a list of standard features are quite possible.
2019 Chevy Equinox
The third generation of this popular crossover is present for about a year. Considering its recent arrival, it is hard to expect some bigger changes already for the second year of production. The 2019 Chevy Equinox will come with the same attractive design, which was originally presented in late 2016. A new look is far more attractive compared to the second-generation model. Also, there are some significant mechanical improvements that made this crossover much better. This includes new platform, updated engines and much more. It is also important to mention that this is probably the only small crossover available with a diesel powertrain in the U.S. For the second year of production we expect to see only some minor changes, such as new color options, few new standard features etc.
2019 Kia Sportage
The 2019 Kia Sportage is going through the real spring cleaning while we are writing this article. A popular crossover like this needs constant updates, so a mid-cycle refresh after three years of production is more than welcome. For this occasion, the company will make many changes. The most notable will be, naturally, those outside. We are about to see a completely new front end, which will include a new shape of headlights, with new LED graphics as well. Also, front bumper is going to receive some reshaping. At the rear end, expect big changes as well. We could see new taillights, bumper and few other details completely new. A new wheels design is also certain. On the other side, we still don’t have information about interior changes. Still, don’t expect changes in interior styling, but more things like new standard features, color schemes, updated infotainment system etc.
2019 Toyota RAV4
One of the most popular small crossovers on the market is going under complete redesign. Toyota’s bestseller is prepared for some significant changes, which will improve even more already impressive sales results. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 will come with significant changes. This will be the fifth generation and first to adopt company’s new TNGA highly modular platform. Inspired by FT-AC Concept, it will feature a far more rugged look. Besides more attractive styling, we expect to see some new things under the hood, as well as new interior design. If we can judge on improvement that new architecture has brought to models like Camry, CH-R or Prius, it is clear that the new generation will feature much better dynamics. Expect hybrid version in the offer too.
2019 GMC Terrain
Just like its brother from Chevy, Equinox, this crossover also came completely new about a year ago. Compared to the previous generation, there are many improvements. Not only that new model looks better, but also comes with some significant technical improvements. For example, engineers have managed to save more than 400 pounds, without sacrificing interior space. Moreover, there is around one-inch more headroom compared to the original. So, we don’t expect to see anything new for the 2019 GMC Terrain after all these changes. It will continue with the same design, featuring same engines. On the other side, it is possible to see some smaller tweaks like new color options, interior color schemes and some additional standard features for each trim level.
2019 Hyundai Tucson
Hyundai and Kia usually work in pair, so 2019 Tucson is also going to receive a mid-cycle refresh, just like Sportage. The current generation is present since 2015, but we are not surprised to see such quick facelift. Moreover, Korean manufacturers have this practice for many years. A refreshed look will make this crossover more attractive and boost sales for sure. The testing model is already on the road but under a heavy camouflage. Both front and rear ends are covered, just like with the Sportage. Moreover, 2019 Hyundai Tucson is under cover from the side too. This indicates that we are about to see some changes on doors as well for this occasion. So, this could be an even more significant visual improvement of the model which already looks pretty good. Mechanical changes don’t seem very likely.
2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
You can find opposite reports about Jeep’s flagship model these days. While some sources suggest a complete redesign for the next year, others believe that the current model will carry on for another few years. We are closer to the second opinion, believing that the full redesign is about to come in 2020 or even later. The next generation is probably going to adopt the new platform from Alfa Romeo. It should have many things in common with the new Stelvio, a luxurious crossover from the renowned Italian carmaker. So, 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee will most likely continue without more important changes. Some smaller updates in terms of new standard features are possible, but things like styling, interior design and engines will definitely remain the same.
2019 Ford Escape
Largely-identical to Kuga, this popular crossover is about to be completely redesigned next years. Once again, this popular crossover will be completely designed in Germany. So, expect a perfect mixture of performances and quality. Compared to the current model, we will see plenty of improvement. An unnamed insider told for the German magazine “Auto Bild” that we can expect plenty of novelties. The 2019 Ford Escape will adopt Ford’s new global platform, which is already used for the new Focus. So, expect things like weight reduction, minimized CO2 emissions, more power etc. Speaking of power, this insider also suggests a new hi-performance version, with over 280 horses. The fourth generation of this crossover will come late in the next year.
2019 Honda CR-V
We are certain about one thing – 2019 Honda CR-V will continue to be one of the class-leaders. This is probably the most versatile crossover in the class. Combining spacious cabin and trunk, with plenty of standard equipment can’t go wrong, but this model offers much more. Its excellent driving characteristics are even better if you choose a new 1.5-liter turbo engine, which offers a great balance between power and efficiency. Additionally, the company prepares a completely new, hybrid version for the next year. You can probably guess – it will use the same powertrain as Accord. With this powertrain, a legendary sedan makes impressive 50 mpg, so we can expect nothing less from the 2019 CR-V. On the other side, gasoline versions will most likely remain unchanged, although we could see few additional features on the list of standard equipment.
2019 Mazda CX-5
This model might not be as popular as CR-V, for example, but it is probably an even better car. Moreover, this could easily be the best crossover in the class. Simply, it doesn’t have weak spots. Launched last year, the second generation came with such amazing quality and refinement. This model doesn’t just feature excellent quality and driving characteristics, but also stupendous styling. This is by far the best-looking crossover in the class. If you add to this a high level of comfort and excellent SkyActive engines, you get a simply amazing vehicle. On the inside, the quality of materials is on such high level that we can easily put this head to head with premium models. Since it is still very fresh, we don’t expect changes for the next year. It will come with the same design and characteristics, although we should see some of the new standard equipment.
2019 Subaru Forester
One of the most anticipated crossovers for this year is definitely the new-generation 2019 Subaru Forester. This excellent crossover has been in production for more than two decades. So far, we have seen four generations of it. The current model is present since 2012 and it will be replaced by the end of the year. The fifth generation is already on the road, in the final phase of testing. Although it wears a camouflage, we can clearly see that the new model will resemble a smaller version of the new Ascent, which had a premiere last year. It will feature pretty much the same look, just in a smaller package. From the technical aspect, the new model should come with Subaru’s excellent engines. Some sources also suggest a hi-performance version, with over 250 horsepower.
2019 Nissan Murano
Although already in the fourth year of production, it looks like the company doesn’t intend to change this great crossover. Known as a highly-versatile five-passenger crossover, the current generation is present since late 2014. So far, we didn’t see bigger changes, although every year model usually brings some nice updates. For example, a 2018-year model comes with a bunch of new standard safety features like a forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking. A navigation system is also now a part of standard equipment. So, 2019 Nissan Murano should continue in the same way. Expect to see some new standard features, but also novelties in terms aesthetic tweaks like new color options etc. Still, it won’t come earlier than usual. It will arrive probably in December.
2019 Ford Edge
This is probably the most anticipated mid-size crossover for the next year and the reason why is quite simple. The company prepares so many changes for the 2019 Ford Edge. This will be a classic mid-cycle refresh, which will include a variety of changes. First of all, there is a new styling to come. The new model will drop the current three-bar grille and get the new one, similar to the bigger Explorer SUV. Besides this update, the company is going to introduce one completely new version. It will be the 2019 Edge ST, a new top-of-the-line trim.
As a hi-performance crossover, this model will come with a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, which is good for about 335 horses. Additionally, this version will feature numerous distinguish visual details compared to the rest of the lineup.
