2022 Toyota Land Cruiser Redesign: Everything You Need To Know

The next generation of the iconic off-roader is on the way, finally! After nearly 14 years of production, the current generation will finally be replaced with the new model, codenamed 300 Series. The testing model has been spotted on the road and while it still wears a heavy cover, we know some of the most basic things about the new iteration of this legend. The 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser will be better in every aspect compared to its predecessor.

Of course, the new generation will ride on a new platform, but we are about to see significant changes in many other aspects as well. One of them is the powertrain, as the latest reports suggest that the good-old V8 won’t be offered anymore. Instead, the new generation will be relying on turbocharged V6 engines, while the hybrid version is possible too. Naturally, you may count on a new styling, new cabin design and other typical novelties that come with redesigns. The new model should arrive in the second half of the year.

2022 Toyota Land Cruiser Redesign

As we’ve just mentioned, one of the first things that come to mind about this redesign is the platform. The current generation has been around for too long, so there is no doubt that the new, body-on-frame version of the TNGA platform will bring significant improvements in various aspects. The new model will be lighter, it will offer better driving characteristics and significant improvements in terms of efficiency.

Of course, the company will continue to improve the legendary off-road performances, so we count on a new suspension setup, new tech and design solutions, advanced systems and more. Most sources suggest an adjustable air suspension, which would drastically improve on-road driving characteristics. Most likely, this feature will be options, while standard models would rather feature a more rugged setup.

Exterior

When it comes to the exterior design, one of the first things that come to mind is the size. Compared to key competitors, the current generation isn’t particularly big. It features just 112.2 inches in wheelbase, which isn’t particularly friendly in terms of interior space. However, a shorter wheelbase means better off-road performances, so we are pretty sure that the new generation won’t get much bigger, especially in terms of the wheelbase.

On the other side, the styling will be completely new. The 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser will get a new appearance and once again, it will be characterized by a unique appearance, compared to the rest of the lineup. The test mule has been on the road for a while. However, it still wears a lot of cover, so it’s hard to talk about details. Still, we are pretty sure that the new styling will be evolutionary, without radical changes compared to the outgoing model.

Interior

The current generation of Land Cruiser is one of the most luxurious SUVs on the market. It features impressive build quality and high-end materials. However, the aesthetical aspect started to show the model’s age, so we have no doubt the new model will come with a lot of improvements. The dashboard will probably keep a rather classic design approach, though that doesn’t mean it won’t feature a full load of tech features.

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser probably won’t feature a much bigger size compared to the outgoing model, so you may expect a rather similar amount of space on the inside. Most likely, base models will come with just two rows of seats, while the third row will be optional. The cargo area might get some additional cubic feet, but probably won’t be much more generous than the current generation, which offers a little bit over 80 cubic feet of total cargo volume.

2022 Toyota Land Cruiser Engines

This will certainly be one of the most interesting aspects of this redesign. At this point, we know for sure that Toyota will drop the good-old 5.7-liter V8. Instead, we will see a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 from the Lexus LS 500, which features a max output of 414 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Besides more power and torque, this engine will also provide significantly better efficiency.

Speaking of efficiency, the company also works on a new 3.3-liter V6 turbodiesel, though the specs are still a mystery. Finally, there is a hybrid version, which still waits for official confirmation. Allegedly, this powertrain will be the same as the one in the upcoming Tundra, with a V6 engine and a max output of around 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque.

At this point, the best we can say that the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser will probably hit the market sometime in the second half of the year. Most likely, the new model won’t be offered in North America but will be in the rest of the world. Therefore, some of the key competitors will be models like Nissan Patrol, Mercedes-Benz G Class, Range Rover etc.
