2023 Kia Soul Preview: Release Date, Turbo, Colors, Redesign, Refresh, EV

Kia’s approach to the segment of subcompact crossover turned out to be great, if we can judge by Soul’s existence on the market that lasts for three generations and almost 15 years. The current iteration has been around since 2020 and despite that some sources speculate about the possible mid-cycle refresh, we rather believe that the next year’s model will continue in the same way. The first two generations featured a relatively short production cycle, without in-cycle updates, so we presume that the current generation won’t be an exception. The 2023 Kia Soul should be a typical carryover model.

This indicates that the next year’s model will continue with familiar design characteristics, which are mostly about practicality, functionality and convenience. Although a subcompact crossover, this model offers plenty of passenger and cargo space, thanks to its boxy shape. We also like its long list of standard equipment, as well as a pretty intuitive infotainment system.

As there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2023 Kia Soul will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.

2023 Kia Soul Design

The current generation has been around since 2020 and we don’t believe that the next year’s model could bring more important updates. We count on a familiar design, which has brought some notable improvements compared to the previous generation. For example, the current generation is bigger than ever, while the more advanced suspension setup ensures a smoother ride.

Visually, the 2023 Kia Soul will continue the tradition established 14 years ago. You may count on a well-familiar boxy shape, which comes with a sharper and more aggressive front-end design this time. The car looks pretty fresh, so we are pretty sure that the next year’s model will bring no notable changes. Still, we won’t exclude the possibility to see new color options. Appearance packages are pretty popular these days, so the Soul might come with some of them too.

Interior

As we already mentioned, this SUV is all about functionality and practicality. Although a subcompact SUV, it offers plenty of passenger room, which accommodates adults in both rows of seats. Thanks to its boxy shape, it offers plenty of headroom, while the amount of legroom is pretty decent as well. The driving position is high and combined with large glass surfaces, it ensures great visibility in all directions.

For the same reason, this boxy crossover offers one of the largest cargo areas in the class. In numbers, that would be around 24.2 cubic feet of space behind the back row and 62.1 cubic feet.

When it comes to interior quality, there are some fine materials around the cabin but most of the areas are covered with hard plastics. However, there are some pretty funky design elements that make this cabin look more interesting. All in all, the cabin looks nice, though there are many rivals that look nicer.

Features

We don’t expect that the next year’s model could bring more important changes in terms of standard and available equipment. Therefore, we presume that all models will come standard with goodies like remote keyless entry, an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Of course, many more things will be available as optional features. Some of the things that come to mind are dual-zone climate control, sunroof, remote start, proximity keyless entry, a 10.25-inch touch screen, navigation, HD Radio, two extra USB ports, wireless device charging, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The same thing is with safety features. So, we expect that base models will come with a rearview camera and rear-seat camera. Of course, many more things will be offered as options. Those are features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane change assists, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, and driver drowsiness monitoring.

2023 Kia Soul Engines

The 2023 Kia Soul is about to carry on with two familiar engine options on the offer. Base models will continue with a familiar 2.0-liter inline-four engine, which puts out around 147 horsepower. It comes in pair with a CVT gearbox and gets the job done. Still, those who would like a little bit of driving excitement should opt for the 1.6-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 201 horsepower. Also, this engine comes coupled with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

When it comes to fuel economy, the base engine returns around 28 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The turbo-four is slightly thirstier and ratings drop by 1 mpg.
